Montana State set to compete at Eagle Invitational in Spokane beginning Monday
BOZEMAN, Montana – The Montana State women's golf team wraps up their stretch of three tournaments in three weeks with the Eagle Invitational, hosted by Eastern Washington at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane, Washington.
Competition at the 54-hole tournament begins with 36 holes on Monday, October 9, and concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday, October 10.
Monday's opening round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. PT/9:30 a.m. MT, while Tuesday's round will also get underway at 8:30 a.m. PT/9:30 a.m. MT. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
Seven other Big Sky teams will participate, including Weber State, Portland State, Idaho, Montana, Idaho State, Northern Colorado, and host Eastern Washington. Gonzaga, Cal State Northridge, Utah Tech, and Utah Valley will also field teams.
Montana State's lineup will feature Scarlet Weidig, Maddie Montoya, Eva Heinz, Lauren Greeny, and Hannah Boraas. Jordan Briggs and Belle Brezovski will compete as individuals.
"We will be looking for consistency as a team," head coach Brittany Basye said. "We know we can play well but we need to back up a good round with a good round. This is a fun golf golf course to play and weather looks good at least Monday so we want to play hard and if weather rolls in Tuesday, be ready to battle."
Last season at the Eagle Invitational, the Bobcats placed second as a team in Spokane, with Weidig winning the individual title thanks to a 1-under 215 (70-71-74), her second career victory. Lauren Greeny placed ninth, shooting 223 (72-72-79). Montana State earned runner-up honors with a then-program record 883 (294-291-298)
Montana State has lived on the road the last few weeks, starting with the Big Sky '54 for IX' Tournament in Saratoga Springs, Utah, two weekends ago before competing at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Lakewood, Washington, this past week.
The Bobcats placed third out of 14 teams at the Big Sky showcase event, with Scarlet Weidig taking home her fourth career individual title, before grinding through two rain-soaked days in the Pacific Northwest on the way to placing tenth out of 22 teams at this past week's competition.
Weidig leads the team in scoring average (72.44) and rounds at or below par (5). In her tournament win at TalonsCove Golf Club two weeks ago, the redshirt junior from Belen Heredia, Costa Rica, set the program record for low 54-hole score (207) while finishing at 9-under-par.
Weidig is one of only four Bobcats in program history to win multiple tournaments, along with Jen McGregor (1993-97), Kelly Gillum (2004-09) and Melanie Wasmann (1996-2000), and her four wins are only behind McGregor's five on the all-time leaderboard.
Maddie Montoya ranks second on the team in scoring average (73.25) and has been the mark of consistency over her first three tournaments this fall, shooting within two strokes of par in seven of her eight rounds.
