The Montana State track and field program returns to competition this weekend as the Bobcats begin their ramp up towards the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships. MSU is slated to participate in the Bengal Invitational, hosted by Idaho State, at Davis Field which is the location of the Big Sky meet which takes place from May 11-14.
"It will be great to get to the site of the conference championships and have our team get some experience on the track and field event venues," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's Director of Track and Field. "It's a really nice facility to compete at. We were there last spring, so we're excited about getting back there."
The Bobcats will have a variety of athletes competing at the meet in Pocatello. Events begin on Friday at 2:30 p.m. while the schedule continues on Saturday at 11 a.m. MSU also appeared in the 2021 version of the Bengal Invitational which saw Bobcat athletes register eight new all-time top 10 marks in the team record book.
"Last year was a really strong meet," Weese said. "Some of that may have been because some of the larger invites were canceled, but it looks pretty strong again. There are teams from the Big Sky Conference, the Mountain West and the WAC, as well as some others. There should be a solid level of competition and it will be good for our team to compete in a meet with large field sizes."
Montana State still ranks highly in various USTFCCCA Track and Field Rating Indexes even after a week hiatus. The Bobcat men and women rank 45th and 66th nationally, respectively, with each also ranked second among Big Sky schools in the conference TFRI.
This weekend's set of meets is the second to last of the regular season, with MSU traveling to Missoula for the Tom Gage Invitational on May 7 as the squad's regular season finale.
"We're definitely getting to the competition season where we're really looking to perform," Weese said. "Obviously, you want to do well in the early season meets. But, when you're two weeks out from conference, you need to be ready to go. I'm sure overall we're doing some training, but that should be coming down a little bit for this meet, and especially over the next couple weeks as we head to conference."
Five distance runners for Montana State will be taking part in a separate meet from the rest of the team. Levi Taylor (steeplechase), Duncan Hamilton (steeplechase), Camila Noe (10,000), Ben Perrin (5,000) and Matthew Richtman (5,000) all are slated to appear in the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford on Friday. The first race for that group begins at 8:30 p.m. MT with all five working to improve their times in their respective events.
"I think it will be a great experience for our distance athletes that are running at Stanford," Weese said. "The Mt. SAC Relays meet was good for them to participate in and we're hoping to build off that. All of them have something that they can get from this meet.
"Duncan is trying to better his PR and get a world A standard. Levi had a breakthrough and is near the top of the NCAA, so if he can get a PR you start to look at the USA Championships and qualifying for it. Camila will be in her first fast 10K, so she's looking for a time that can be a regional qualifier. Ben and Matt both can get a regional mark as well in the 5K, so all five have something to shoot for."
