"We're excited to play Montana and get a gauge of the progress we have made this spring," said Daniel Jones, who enters his sixth season as head coach of the Bobcats. "None of the kids in our program have had a spring season to improve upon their skills and development due to Covid-19. This spring has been hugely beneficial for our foundation and for our progress is the weight room."
Last season, MSU went 15-14 overall and finished fourth in Big Sky action with a 10-6 ledger. The Bobcats defeated Northern Arizona in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Tournament, before dropping a 3-2 decision to defending champion and host Weber State. MSU's loss to the Wildcats in five sets (the fifth going 15-12) was the closest any Bobcat team has come to advancing to a Big Sky title match.
Three Bobcats – Kira Thomsen, Emma Pence, Jordan Radick – return as all-conference performers, while sophomore Jourdain Klein garnered all-league kudos two seasons ago. Radick, a Bozeman native, was the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year, last fall.
"We've focused a lot this spring on first contact," Jones said. "And we've witnessed this group come together as a cohesive unit. We feel we have all the pieces, and along with our incoming class, we'll continue to raise the bar and move the program into situations it's never been before."
Jones returns 12 letterwinners, including four starters from last season's squad.
"We can't wait to showcase our development," Jones said. "And what better way to push ourselves than to play Cat-Griz to culminate spring practice."
