Bobcats face Drake, Utah and Utah State in a period of 24 hours or so...
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State encounters drastically different scenarios this weekend, when the Bobcat men's tennis team travels to Utah for three matches in roughly 24 hours against top-notch competition.
"We'll see strong competition this weekend," said Bobcat men's coach Trey Morris, "but our focus will be on us. That's always our mindset. We want to play our game and set the tone."
The Bobcats open weekend play against Drake on a neutral court Sunday at 1 pm. The Bulldogs' 0-5 record isn't splashy, but MSU coach Trey Morris says there's much more there than a quick glance indicates. "Drake's record doesn't indicate how strong that team is," Morris said. "It's a very good program.
Drake is 0-5 this season before a Saturday match at Utah State, but the Bulldogs' losses include 4-3 decisions at Nebraska and Wisconsin, and more lopsided defeats at the hands of nationally-ranked Arkansas (6-1) and Oklahoma (7-0).
"We haven't seen Drake," Morris said, "but we certainly have a ton of respect for that program."
After facing a team it hasn't seen in recent years, the Bobcats encounter a pair of familiar rivals on their home courts. MSU meets Utah at 5 pm Sunday in Salt Lake City, then travels to Logan on Monday for an 11 am match at Utah State.
"We've seen a lot of Utah and Utah State in the past, and we faced them in the fall," Morris said. "We know what to expect. We know they both play at a high level. But we also know what kind of team we have and what level we're playing at right now. We have confidence that we're capable of getting (positive) results this weekend."
The Utes enter weekend play 11-0 after beating Boise State 4-2 and Nevada 4-0 at home last weekend. Utah hosts Drake on Saturday morning at 9 am. Utah State is 3-4 on the season after falling 4-3 to Drake at home on Saturday. The Bulldogs lost to Gonzaga (4-3) and Washington (7-0), as well.
Morris said he hopes to track one key indicator to his team's success this weekend. "We're emphasizing the importance of doing what we want to do in doubles," he said. "Whether we win or lose the (doubles) point in these matches, we want to set the tone from the very beginning."
Next weekend the Bobcats play North Dakota on Friday and Omaha on Saturday, both in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
