MEN'S TENNIS: Jakob Mosvold Snares Singles Win, but Bobcats Fall at Utah State

MSU captures doubles point in come-from-behind fashion

Montana State won the doubles point and freshman Jakob Mosvold earned a dramatic singles victory, but in between Utah State swept five singles matches to earn a 5-2 non-conference win on Sunday in Logan.

After dropping the doubles match at the top ladder spot Brad Buckland and Joaquin Espinoza earned a 7-5 win at No. 2, and Manuel Monteiro and Jakob Mosvold won at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Bobcats. For Monteiro and Mosvold, it was their first doubles match together.

Utah State won the first four singles matches to clinch the team victory. Joaquin Espinoza won the first set 6-4 for the Bobcats to start things well, but dropped the next two 6-0, 6-3. USU's Souf El Mesbahi topped Nejc Sitar 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Felipe Acosta beat MSU's Daan Van Dijk 6-1, 7-5, and Keanu Rigby beat Bobcat freshman Jacob Huppin 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6. When Roko Savin beat MSU's Brad Buckland 7-6, 6-0 at the fourth ladder spot, USU had the doubles victory.

Bocu clinched his win over Espinoza just before Mosvold won a dramatic 6-7, 6-3, 11-9 victory at No. 5. That raised the freshman's record to 3-1 on the season.

"We played a good doubles point and had looks to take three first sets (in singles play)," said Bobcat coach Trey Morris. "Utah State fought hard and got the better of us today. We are a very young team and are learning a lot and improving every match. We are ready for a breakthrough any minute."

Montana State plays at BYU and Weber State on Monday before finishing the road trip at Utah on Tuesday.
