Freshman Shayla Webber is another Treasure State standout that Head Coach Daniel Jones earmarked years ago as one of the best in the players in the state.
Every Friday from now until the beginning of the volleyball season will we spotlight a member of the Bobcat volleyball program. Now up is freshman Shayla Webber.
Freshman Shayla Webber is another Treasure State standout that Head Coach Daniel Jones earmarked years ago as one of the best in the players in the state. Jones has remained steadfast in landing Montana's top talent. After signing Jourdain Klein (Ennis) last year, Jones hit paydirt again with Webber. A fiery player that brings a lot of energy to the club, Webber has a passion to make the MSU volleyball program the best it can be and to leave her legacy in Shroyer Gym.
CATCHING UP WITH SHAYLA:
1). Can you give us an update on your current status?
I am currently in Bozeman and living in Yellowstone Hall on campus. I have been enjoying a Montana summer by doing a number of outdoor activities, as well as getting to know my new teammates, and doing open gyms and workouts. All of the chaos in the world has been hard on everyone in many ways, so I think it's really important to take each day as it comes and count our blessings. If we strive to control the things that we can control, I think we will find joy in the now as well as peace as we roll into the upcoming events.
2). Can you tell us about yourself, family, hometown and what you like to do outside of volleyball?
I grew up in a very small town called Joliet, Montana. I like to say it's a small town with a big heart; everyone's family! It has a gorgeous view of the Beartooth Mountains and is close to a lot of fun outdoor recreation and beautiful scenery. My family means everything to me, and we are very tight knit. I have two older brothers who brought out the competitive side in me at a very young age, and I have the most supportive and loving parents I could've asked for. Outside of volleyball I love to spend time with friends and family, study in my Bible journal, spend lots of time outside, and cook good food.
3). How has the transition into collegiate volleyball been going for you this summer?
The transition into collegiate volleyball has been really great this summer thanks to the girls on the team. All of the girls have been very welcoming and have shown us the ropes fast. There are always nerves that surround this transition, but our teammates, coaches, and faculty members have made coming to Bozeman very smooth for all of us and I have been so thankful for that.
4). What are your goals heading into the fall and what are the expectations for the team?
Some of my goals for the upcoming season are to continually be growing as a player and a person, learning the new skills and ropes quick, and being a voice of encouragement and intensity for my team. As a team our big goal is to win the Big Sky Championship. I know we will do our part in the gym, weight room, and even off the court to get there.

"I'm really excited to see what Shayla can do, throughout high school and club volleyball she has had to be the solution to a lot of problems for her teams, she has hit, she has set, she has passed and played defense. She has been the heart and soul of so many teams. So, now that we get the opportunity to let her just focus on being a passer and defender, I am going to be really intrigued how good she can become. She has all the physical attributes to be great; she comes from a volleyball family, she has been around the game since she was in diapers, she reads the game well and has a fearless and tenacious presence on the court. I'm really at the point where I just can't wait to get in the gym and to see what she can develop in to."

Webber was a four-time all-state selection…led Joliet to a 24-10 overall mark as a senior and a trip to the Montana Class B state tournament where they finished runner-up…was a four-time all-conference pick…totaled 1,919 assists, 1,314 digs, 620 kills and 204 aces during her career with the J-Hawks…started every match as a varsity player since her freshman season…guided the squad to the state tournament each season, as well…was a three-time team captain…excelled off the court being named academic all-state on four occasions…a National Honor Society member.
