Bobcats Drop Pair in Wyoming
3/2/2019 8:11:00 PM | Women's Tennis
“The light from the past two days is that we have made some big jumps in key areas,” Reeves said. “Now, we take those improvements and bring it to our next conference match.”
LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Montana State women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday night in Wyoming. New Mexico State won a hard-fought 4-3 decision over the Bobcats, Saturday on the University of Wyoming indoor courts, while Wyoming handed MSU a 4-1 setback on Friday night at the Wyoming Athletic Club in Casper.
Against New Mexico State, the Bobcats opened the match taking the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. MSU's No. 2 tandem of Linda Vink and Enni Zander captured the first point with a 7-5 decision over Lindsay Harlas and Yadira Rubio.
Bobcat junior Laura Mary had a decisive 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Rebecca Keijzerwaard to give MSU a 2-0 advantage. The Aggies answered with straight set wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 6 singles to take a 3-2 lead. Montana State's Annie Walker out-lasted Harlas at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2 to even the match at three-all. Rubio swept Sara Iverson at No. 5 singles 7-5, 6-3 to give the Aggies the match.
"I thought we had another great night of doubles," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "Laura Mary had a decisive win at No. 1, but in our remaining matches we were earning a lot of opportunities to put away games, but we did not finish the task."
Against Wyoming, the Bobcats again took the opening doubles point, but fell at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles in straight sets.
"We had an incredible environment playing at a neutral site against Wyoming," Reeves said. "There were a ton of fans, excited to watch a college tennis match, and it did not disappoint. We came out and took the doubles point against a very good Wyoming doubles squad. Our team came out with a ton of energy and brought a high level of play.
"Our Nos. 1-4 singles players kept the pressure on and made Wyoming beat them," Reeves added. "I was proud of the effort and enthusiasm we brought to the table."
The Bobcats will play at Northern Colorado on Sunday morning.
