The Montana State golf team competes for the first time in 2019 when the Bobcats begin action at the Battle at the Rock in Riverside, Calif., on Monday. It is the first tournament for the Bobcats since they participated in the Pat Lessor Harbottle Invitational from Oct. 15-16, 2018.
"I think the thing we're most looking forward to is hitting off of green grass," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "I think everyone is excited to get out there. It's kind of been a harsh winter and we haven't been able to get outside at all. A few of the girls got to play over break, other than that we've been inside."
Montana State competed in four tournaments during the fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule.
Juniors Delaney Elliott, Kelly Hooper and Coral Schulz golfed in all four of MSU's fall events and will serve as the top three in the Bobcats' lineup on Monday. Hooper and Schulz each carded scoring averages less than 77 strokes per round to open the season, while Elliott followed with a 78.72 average.
Senior Clare Dittemore and Sofia Rodriguez Todd take up the Bobcats' remaining two spots in the lineup on Monday and will each play in their fourth tournament of the season. Freshman Lucia Prieto Romano is slated to compete as an individual as the Bobcats get outdoors competitively for the first time since 2018.
"This tournament for me is going to be about seeing how everybody hits it outside and then getting to the golf course," Basye said. "It's a totally different game. We can hit ball after ball, but we have to translate that to the golf course."
The Battle at the Rock begins with an 8:30 a.m. MST Monday with the 16-team tournament field scheduled to play 36 holes. The field of 87 golfers will make their way through the par 72, 6,046-yard Oak Quarry Golf Course over two days, with a final round of 18 holes taking place on Tuesday.
Dittemore, Elliott, Hooper and Schulz all competed on the course at the 2018 edition of the Battle at The Rock which was their opening event of the spring a year ago. It will be Rodriguez Todd and Prieto Romano's first look at the course and first appearance at the tournament hosted by UC Riverside.
"We haven't played 36 holes since last October and we're starting out with that," Basye said. "The weather looks good so I'm happy about that. It'll be nice to get six of our girls out there to see how they're hitting and having them hit high percentage shots."
The Bobcats are scheduled to appear in five tournaments in preparation for the Big Sky Conference Championship. The Big Sky meet takes place in Boulder City, Nev., from April 19-21.
