Junior Kelly Hooper sits in the top 30 of the individual standings to pace Montana State through the opening day of the Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Junior Kelly Hooper sits in the top 30 of the individual standings to pace Montana State through the opening day of the Battle at the Rock at Oak Quarry Golf Club. The Bobcats are 13th in the team standings with seven holes of the second round and third round play remaining on Tuesday.
"Kelly played really good in the first round to lead us," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We are rusty and that's to be expected since we haven't been outside and able to actually play on a golf course."
Hooper fired a 3-over-par 75 to open play on Monday and is 6-over more than half way through her second round.
Montana State responded with a strong second round effort after a tough opening 18-hole round of 2019. The Bobcats shot a 319 as a team in the first round.
Coral Schulz is 2-over through 11 holes of her second set of 18 holes and shot an 83 to begin the day. Delaney Elliott is 3-over and Clare Dittemore is 6-over to this point in the second round after each fired an 81 and 80, respectively. Sofia Rodriguez Todd carded an 87 in her opening round and is 8-over to start her second round.
MSU freshman Lucia Prieto Romano shot an 80 in the first round and is at 2-over through 13 holes playing individually.
"I told (the team) to play smart and play the higher percentage shots that they know," Basye said. "I saw some good things and we will go out tomorrow and finish the second 18 and try to finish the third 18 out. We need to take advantage of the green grass and being able to play on a golf course. It was a long day and I'm proud of them for hanging in there."
The Bobcats return to second round action at the Battle at the Rock with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. MST at Oak Quarry Golf Club Tuesday. The tournament field will immediately begin the third round following the conclusion of the remaining second round holes.
