Interim Head Coach Trey Morris gets first taste of 2019-20 squad
As first impressions go, Montana State's trip to the Idaho State Invitational fall men's tennis tournament was positive.
Bobcat sophomore Marcos Zelver defeated teammate Joaquin Espinoza 5-7, 6-4, 10-3 to claim third place in the back-draw. Zelver finished the tournament, held October 5-6 in Pocatello, 2-1, while Espinoza was 2-2. They led the Cats in the team's first action of the fall.
It was also the first tournament for Trey Morris, hired as the program's assistant coach shortly before head coach Jared Burnham accepted a similar position Eastern Washington. The trip to Pocatello capped a whirlwind month, in which Morris came to Bozeman to oversee the team's fall practices, returned to Georgia, and completed the move back to Bozeman.
Morris liked what he saw at ISU. "Everybody was fighting hard," he said. "It was the first tournament of the year so to knock some rust off and get back into competition (was good). The most important thing to me was the energy level of the guys and the intensity of fighting for each point and putting ourselves in winning position. Going forward that's really going to pay off."
Four of Montana State's six players earned victories at the ISU event, which included contingents from ISU, Boise State, Weber State, Montana, and Air Force. One of Morris' priorities for the fall is to create positive energy, and his team took a step in that direction with its performance at Idaho State. "One of the biggest things for me is getting the guys confident going into the spring season, making sure everyone is competition-ready for the spring, figure out what the doubles lineups are, who plays well together, who meshes together both skill-set-wise and personality-wise. And then we need to figure out where we're going to be in the first match of the (spring) season in singles."
