LA JOLLA, Calif. – Several Montana State student-athletes completed top 10 program record marks to wrap up weekend events on Saturday, April 14, in the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego's Triton Track and Field Stadium.
The Montana State women's squad had three Bobcats enter the top 10 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. MSU had the top five finishers in the event with Anna French leading the way. Her time of 10 minutes, 22.55 seconds moved her to second all-time in program history in the event. She was followed by Trisha Carlson (10:35.93) and Layne Oliver (10:44.03) with Carlson moving up a spot and Oliver re-joining the Bobcat top 10 list in the 3,000 steeple.
Lexi Kyro (10:58.11) and Madison Liechty (11:15.82) rounded out the Bobcat showing in the event.
MSU senior Amanda Jaynes put together two solid individual performances. Jaynes placed first in the 400 hurdles in a time of 58.19, which is the 15th fastest in the nation, and also just three-hundredths of a second behind her lifetime best. She also tied a personal-best mark of 13.91 in the 100 hurdles which was good for fifth place.
On the men's side, Diego Leon moved to fourth all-time in the Bobcat record book behind a runner-up effort. His time of 3:44.09 led the way for MSU, while Cameron Carroll (3:48.42) and Riley Collins (3:56.10) had personal bests to take fifth and 11th, respectively. Leon also finish third overall in the 5,000 by crossing the line in 14:42.02.
"We really got what we were looking for across the board," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "We had a few exceptions, but nearly every kid had a season-best mark along with a lot of lifetime best marks. We just continue to get better and we've improved since the Utah Spring Classic last week. This is another step forward for us heading towards the Big Sky Championships."
Alex Lewis completed two strong showings for the Bobcat men. He finished runner-up in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump, with his second event a lifetime-best leap of 47-10.50 (14.59m).
Ty Mogan earned a first-place finish for the Bobcats in California. He completed a lifetime best of 9:07.77 in the 3,000 steeplechase, while Anthony Schmalz (9:13.77) and Gannon Chamberlain (9:59.12) took third and fifth, respectively.
Samantha Kelderman (17:04.10) and Noah Martin (6-07) both put together runner-up performances at the Triton Invite in the 5,000 and high jump. MSU's 4x400 men's and women relays each finished second with season-best times.
Placing in the top five in at least one event were Carley Vonheeder (javelin), McKenna Ramsay (55.56), Kyle Douglass (shot put), Mitch Horning (200) and Drake Schneider (400 hurdles). Ramsay also finished eighth in the 200, while Schneider also took ninth in the 100 hurdles.
"The weather was really conducive for us to have some great performances this week," Kennedy said. "It was really a great a step forward for us today. We're looking forward to coming back to California next week for the Long Beach Invitational as well as the Mt. SAC Relays."
Montana State's track and field team will have multiple student-athletes return to California next weekend for the Bobcats' final trip outside of Montana ahead of the Big Sky Conference Championships. The Bobcats will have athletes competing in the Mt. SAC Relays, Beach Invitational and Pacific Coast Intercollegiate from April 19-21.
