The Bobcats begin a busy stretch of travels when Montana State's track and field squads split up to compete at the Triton Invitational and Montana Open this upcoming weekend.
MSU will have athletes participating in La Jolla, Calif., at the Triton Invite hosted by UC San Diego, while the Bobcats will also send athletes to Missoula for the Montana Open held at Dornblaser Field. Both meets have a majority of events taking place on Saturday, April 14.
"We're dividing and conquering with 46 athletes going to California and another 35 going over to Montana," Montana State head coach Dale Kennedy said. "This week provides competition experience for everybody on the roster that's healthy enough to compete."
The Bobcats traveled south a weekend ago with a trip to Utah for the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic. With a change in scenery, MSU improved its numbers to 45 on the Big Sky performance list with several Bobcat athletes moving into the top 20 among Big Sky competitors in outdoor events.
Eleven of those athletes have times or marks that would put them currently on a podium at the Big Sky meet. Cameron Carroll and Kyle Douglass both have two events they rank among the top three in the conference on the men's side. Reigning Big Sky Women's Track Athlete of the Week Amanda Jaynes has the top time in the conference in the 400 hurdles and sits at third in the 100 hurdles.
"We have another great opportunity this weekend and it's another meet on the way to the conference championships," Kennedy said. "We're coming off a really good weekend at the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic. We had a lot of season-best marks and the kids really improved. We had friendlier conditions which had something to do with it and we're starting to shake the rust off from a long lay-off after our indoor season."
The Bobcats look to improve on their regional rankings and individual qualifying marks over the next two weeks.
MSU's men's squad is 12th on the USTFCCCA Mountain Region Rankings list and the women's team is outside the top 15 at 17th overall. While multiple Bobcat athletes sit in position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round following the conference meet, numerous more are on the outside looking in. Douglass, Jaynes, Calvin Root, Cameron Carroll and Kelsi Lasota are all within the top 48 among West Region athletes that would currently qualify to compete in Sacramento at the regional preliminaries.
Following this weekend's meets, a select contingent of Bobcats will head back to California for the Mt. SAC Relays at El Camino College and Beach Invitational in Long Beach from April 19-21. The two meets will be the last time the Bobcat track squads travel outside of the state before the Big Sky Championships. MSU travels to Missoula for the Cat-Griz Dual and the Tom Gage Classic ahead of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships which will be hosted by the University of Idaho in Moscow beginning on May 8.
