MSU raises its record to 3-0 with near whitewash, winning each singles set
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State ran its Big Sky Conference record to 3-0 Friday with a 7-0 home win over North Dakota, but Bobcats head coach Jared Burnham finds that the roots of the team's current success lies below the surface.
"I think that the two (Big Sky) road wins really helped," Burham said. "I think they realized, 'This is it, we have a good team, we're playing well.' And they've played well lately."
The Cats won the doubles point with wins at the top two ladder spots, but both were hard-fought contests and North Dakota captured its only win of the day at No. 3 doubles. None of that would hold true in singles competition.
Montana State won three individual sets 6-0 as the Cats swept through singles play. Alex Flink won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and Joaquin Espinoza won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 to lead the way, but no Bobcat player dropped a single set. Burnham was most impressed with Flink's play.
"Al played really well," he said. "He might have made (only) 10 mistakes all day, he was just really solid. He did what he needed to do."
The Bobcats take a break from Big Sky play next week, traveling to Idaho for matches at Lewis-Clark State on Thursday and Boise State on Friday. MSU returns to league action with three straight road matches spanning late March and early April.
