No Luck: Cats Drop 4-3 Decision to North Dakota on St. Paddy’s Day

“We started out with a very solid doubles point taking each court 6-4,” said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. “Laura Mary did an outstanding job and took control of her match immediately. She is progressing mentally and physically with her game as the season rolls on.”
The deck was pretty much stacked against Montana State from the start as they faced a North Dakota squad shouting 'Go Green' and featuring players named Finnigan and Sullivan.
The end result was a 4-3 come-from-behind victory for the Fighting Hawks on St. Patrick's Day in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. The loss snapped MSU's three-match win streak.
The Bobcats got on the board first winning the doubles point sweeping all three matches by identical 6-4 decisions. The win was followed by a convincing victory by MSU's Laura Mary at the top singles spot. The product of Eaubonne, France dispatched UND's Carmen Palumbo 6-2, 6-0 to give the Bobcats an early 2-0 advantage.
"We started out with a very solid doubles point taking each court 6-4," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves. "Laura Mary did an outstanding job and took control of her match immediately. She is progressing mentally and physically with her game as the season rolls on."
North Dakota evened the match at two-all as Nos. 2 and 3 singles finished simultaneously. North Dakota's Isa Sullivan recorded a 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 win over Annie Walker at No. 2 singles, while Elly Hartnett rallied for a 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over Linda Vink at No. 3 on the ladder.
"I have to give credit to UND for their fight," Reeves said. "They put us into situations where they were willing to hit more balls than we were."
Bobcat senior Angelina Philippova halted the North Dakota run putting MSU up 3-2 with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Preethi Kasilingam at No. 4 singles.
"Angelina is really coming into form," Reeves commented. "She has stepped-up big and is showing outstanding senior leadership. Her confidence in her game is growing with each match."
The Fighting Hawks tied the match with a three-set win at No. 5 singles, before Jaylee Yasunaga completed UND's come back with a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Sarah Cheverie at No. 6 singles.
"This season we have played five matches out of 11 which ended 4-3 or 3-4," Reeves said. "We had won three-in-a-row, but (today) we were in control of the situation and we let it get away from us."
With the loss the Bobcats drop to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky Conference action.
"This is a tough conference loss for our team," Reeves stated. "Our team will absorb this loss and understand what needs to improve. It's ok to have your back against the wall and learn tough lessons. We will bounce back from this and move forward with our process and goals.
"Our team has come a long way in the past eight months," Reeves continued. "This is another opportunity to learn and to grow our resilience and determination."
The Bobcats will host perennial Big Sky power Sacramento State on Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
