MSU plays first home matches of 2018
BOZEMAN, Montana – The stakes are different but the competition level the same when Montana State hosts a pair of long-time rivals in men's tennis this weekend.
The Bobcats host Montana in a non-conference match Friday at 11 am, and 24 hours later host league-leading Idaho in Big Sky Conference competition at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. Both matches are free and open to the public.
Both teams visiting Bozeman this weekend are off to strong starts. Montana is 1-1 overall and has yet to play a conference match. The Grizzlies' late start presages a busy month of March, in which they play nine matches in a four-week period. They also host Idaho on Sunday.
"Montana has a strong, experienced team," said Bobcat coach Jared Burnham. "This will be a great test for us, it will give us a good indication where we are in the Big Sky even though it isn't a conference match."
The Vandals have raced to a 3-0 conference start, and are 3-3 overall. Idaho has wins at North Dakota and Northern Colorado, along with a home win over Weber State. "Idaho's a very solid team," Burnham said, "and deep. They've really been a tough team since joining the league."
Montana State has received a boost from freshman Joaquim Espinoza this season. He is 3-3 on the season, tied as MSU's top singles mark, and has bolstered the fourth and fifth ladder spots. Adrian Torrico is also 3-3, 2-0 in Big Sky play. Rok Sitar is also 2-0 in the league.
