“We’ve got some growing to do,” said MSU second-year head coach Daniel Jones. “We lacked energy and engagement in the first two sets. We found it after the break, but it was too little too late.”
Northern Arizona's offensive attack was one of its best since upsetting No. 8-ranked Florida on Sept. 7. The Lumberjacks hit at a .373 clip, en route to a 25-13, 25-12, 25-21 win over Montana State on Thursday night in the Rolle Activity Center.
Northern Arizona (11-7, 3-2) out-hit Montana State (6-10, 1-4) .397 to .033 over the opening two sets to take a commanding advantage heading into the break.
The final set featured seven ties in the early going, before NAU rattled off a 6-1 run to take a 13-9 lead. MSU kept it close at 18-17 following a Kelsie White kill, but the Lumberjacks scored two straight points to secure the win.
"We've got some growing to do," said MSU second-year head coach Daniel Jones. "We lacked energy and engagement in the first two sets. We found it after the break, but it was too little too late."
Natalie Passeck paced the Bobcats with eight kills, while setter Carina Lehto and Allie Lynch combined for 23 assists.
Defensively, MSU was led by junior libero with 14 kills, while McKayla Landreth added a team-high three blocks.
Northern Arizona was guided by Kaylie Jorgenson with 12 kills and 14 digs.
"I've said it before, and it's true, we have another chance on Saturday," Jones commented. "We don't have long to lick our wounds. We have to grow, and we have to do it fast."
MSU will play at Southern Utah on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Cedar City.
