Montana State’s golf team is set to participate in its final tournament this fall when the Bobcats tee off at the Pat Lessor Harbottle Invitational on Monday
Montana State's golf team is set to participate in its final tournament this fall when the Bobcats tee off at the Pat Lessor Harbottle Invitational on Monday, Oct. 15. MSU closes out its fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule and will return to play when they travel to California for the Battle at the Rock on Feb. 11, 2019.
"I'd love to see us pick up some confidence to end the fall," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "We haven't been able to practice outside lately and the only day we'll be able to get out is today.
"I think it may have been a good break, but also, we may be a bit rusty in some things including confidence. The course we're facing is tree-lined so it's very similar to Riverside Country Club, so we should be use to it."
Montana State will compete in a 17-team field that begins play with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. MST Monday at Tacoma Country and Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash. The tournament, hosted by Seattle University, features 36 holes of golf on the opening day and the third round consisting of 18 holes Tuesday. Big Sky Conference members Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana and Weber State are scheduled to appear in the tournament that is made up of teams from the Northwest and Midwest.
"There's four other teams in the tournament from the Big Sky competing so we will see how we stack up against them," Basye said. "The field is bigger. It's fun to compete against some new teams we haven't seen yet. If we do get paired with them, I think it will be a good opportunity for our girls."
The course will be playing at a par 72 and covers 6,086 yards. This tournament will be the fourth for MSU this fall.
Leading the Bobcats through the first three events this year have been juniors Kelly Hooper and Coral Schulz. Hooper's 75.75 scoring average narrowly edges Schulz's 75.88 mark. Those two will be joined by junior Delaney Elliott, along with freshmen Hailey Oster and Sofia Rodriguez Todd, in the Invitational lineup.
"I'm going to see how consistent they play during each of the three rounds," Basye said. "We have issues when we play iffy and try to come back from that. I'd like for us to have a couple individuals score well and find themselves at the top of the standings."
Hooper has found herself in the top five on two occasions individually this fall. She's finished in a tie for third and alone in fourth in back-to-back tournaments to pace MSU. Schulz has sat around the top 10 in all three events this fall and carded an 8-over 224 over 54 holes at the most recent Rose City Collegiate.
The two Bobcats will look for help in the team score this weekend from Elliott, Oster and Rodriguez Todd.
Elliott is third on the team in scoring average with a 78.63 mark. She's carded an even-par 18-hole round this season, which is the second best on the team, while she's finished in the Bobcats' top four in each meet. Oster has participated in all three tournaments for the Bobcats this fall and Rodriguez Todd will be making her third appearance of her collegiate career.
"I'm looking for us to put together three consistent rounds," Basye said of MSU's upcoming meet. "I want us to be able to start and finish strong and stay steady throughout the tournament."
