Montana State track and field begins 2018 by hosting its annual multis meet inside of Worthington Arena starting on Monday, Jan. 8. The Bobcats' pentathlon and heptathlon athletes open competition at 1 p.m. on Monday, with the heptathlon concluding on Tuesday with the three remaining events starting at 10 a.m.
Montana State and University of Montana athletes are scheduled to compete in the opening meet of the New Year. Seventeen athletes have been entered into the meet with a majority coming from the Griz contingent.
"This year we've kind of thinned out who's going to be in the multis and who's not," assistant coach Tom Eitel said. "We've got three solid guys in Mason, Caleb and Noah, then we add a fourth with Brock Butcher, although this will be new for him. The other three are veterans. For the women, Jazmin will compete for us, but this is new for her too."
Mason Storm won his first indoor Big Sky title by earning 5,340 points in the heptathlon – third most in program history – at the indoor Big Sky Championships in Pocatello a year ago. He accomplished the feat in his senior year of indoor eligibility and has just a year of outdoor eligibility left when spring arrives.
That leaves Caleb Neth as MSU's most experienced multis athlete for the indoor season. Neth finished fifth at the 2017 Big Sky Outdoor Championships in the decathlon (6,586 points). Martin joins him with previous experience in the heptathlon. Martin was the top finisher at the MSU Multis meet in 2017 with the then freshman scoring 4,810 points.
On the women's side, Jessica Chrisp completed a senior season in 2017 by taking fifth in the pentathlon and fourth in the heptathlon at the Big Sky Indoor and Big Sky Outdoor Championships, respectively. Wilberg is set to represent the MSU women's team in her first appearance in the pentathlon on Monday.
"For Jazmin it's an event she isn't use to, Eitel said. "For her, she'll get experience in the warm-up, the time in between and how you just get ready for the pentathlon. For the guys, it's just a matter of finding out where they're at now and where they end up by the end of the season."
The entire Montana State men's and women's track and field teams make their first appearance of the 2018 indoor campaign on Friday inside Worthington Arena. Field events take place at the MSU Invitational at 3:30 p.m., followed by the start of running events at 5 p.m.
