BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Bobcats have a unique opportunity beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, when Montana State hosts the first-ever Battle at Old Works golf tournament in Anaconda. MSU, along with seven other Division I women's golf teams, will compete at Old Works Golf Club.
The course, as recently as 2016, is known as one of America's 100 greatest public courses and features a Jack Nicklaus signature design.
"Obviously, we're very excited to be able to go over to Old Works and host the tournament," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "Old Works is one of the top public courses and it's a favorite in Montana. Back when we were putting this tournament together, our initial thought was 'who wouldn't want to come to Montana in the fall?' Then we had to decide what kind of course we wanted to play at and Old Works fit perfectly in the middle between Montana and Montana State.
"The course is in great shape, the greens are rolling, it's green and the sand is marvelous to look at. The awesome thing about that golf course is the black slag. I guarantee none of these teams have ever hit out of black slag. It's state of the art and it's one of a kind."
The Troon-style golf course will give the Division I field a different experience to what the golfers are accustomed to. Old Works plays at a par-72 and 6,456 yards over the span of 18 holes. The eight institutions in the tournament field includes MSU, Montana, North Dakota State, Santa Clara, CSU Fullerton, CSU Northridge, Eastern Washington and Idaho State.
"When we first sent the tournament out, we got a pretty good response," Basye said. "I was surprised because Fullerton, CSUN and Santa Clara were in right away. I thought it was great that they wanted to come out to Montana, flying in to Bozeman or Butte, and they're coming to play golf here which they've never done. The NDSU coach (Matt Johnson) was bragging about the golf course and most of the coaches I heard responses from had heard of the course or either played it themselves.
"I think the field is competitive, I think it will be a great venue, and I think it will be an event that will be reoccurring and we'll just build every year. Old Works has been very accommodating and I think we're all excited about the opportunity."
The eight teams begin play Monday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start and will complete 36 holes over the course of the day. The Battle at Old Works final round is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Live results for the entire tournament will be available at golfstatresults.com.
Montana State returns four out of five from its Big Sky Conference Championship lineup from a season ago and has seven on its roster heading into the fall slate. Making up the Bobcats' Battle at Old Works contingent will be junior Clare Dittemore and sophomores Delaney Elliott, Kelly Hooper, Lilly Navarre and Coral Schulz.
"We've got Kelly, Coral and Delaney back after playing in pretty much every tournament a year ago," Basye said. "I'm excited to see how hard they've worked over the summer. Lilly has been redshirted so she hasn't competed for us yet as a Bobcat, so I'm excited to see her competing in the blue and gold and see what she can do for us. Clare has competed for us before. She's worked really hard over the summer and I have no doubt that she'll participate and make an impact in our lineup."
