For the second time in the Jon Reeves era, the Montana State women's tennis team will play in the Big Sky Conference Tournament, beginning Thursday afternoon in Phoenix against No. 6 North Dakota at 3 p.m. (MDT).
The other first-round match-up has No. 4 Idaho State meeting No. 5 Northern Colorado. Winners will move on to Friday's semifinals against No. 1 Northern Arizona and No. 2 Idaho. The championship match will be played on Saturday at 2 p.m.
"Tournament time is here and this is what we have been preparing for since last season ended," Reeves said. "We are prepared. To win it we must play well from the top of the lineup to the bottom. And, that starts with North Dakota."
Reeves, who is in his second season as head coach with the Bobcats, guided this year's squad to one of the best in school history. MSU will enter the tournament 13-5 overall, after posting a 9-2 regular-season league ledger. Montana State was in the hunt for a league title and a top two seed going into the final two weeks of the 2017 campaign.
MSU's 9-2 Big Sky record is second-best since the 2009 team posted a 7-1 league mark. In addition, MSU's 13 victories is the best since the 2002 team posted 13, as well. The 1997 Bobcats hold the school-record with 17 wins in a season.
The Bobcats have been paced this by freshman Chloe Goyette. The Yakima, Wash., product is 15-3 overall with a 6-1 record at No. 1 singles and a 9-2 slate at No. 2. In addition, Goyette has combined with senior Laura Middel, where the tandem holds the best record in the Big Sky at 10-1 overall.
Also in singles action, MSU junior Angelina Philippova has registered the second best mark in the Big Sky Conference with an 11-6 record at the No. 4 spot on the ladder.
Aside from Goyette and Middel at the top doubles spot, the Bobcats have also received stellar play from seniors Jessica Brycki and Naomi Holopainen at No. 2 doubles. The duo has tallied a 9-2 record, which is third best in the Big Sky this spring.
"We need to play with enthusiasm and efficiency," Reeves said. "The heat is going to be an issue with the Big Sky schools. None of us have been exposed to 90+ degrees on a daily basis. Matches are going to come down to who is better prepared and has taken care of the details."
Earlier this season, Montana State defeated North Dakota 6-1 in Grand Forks. MSU opened the match winning the doubles point at Nos. 1 and 3, before capturing five of six singles matches. UND's lone point came at No. 2 singles in a three-set decision.
"It's 'go' time," Reeves added. "Time to have fun competing."
