The Montana State women's tennis team hosts perhaps its most important weekend in almost ten years as they face Montana and Northern Arizona on Friday and Saturday, respectively in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. Both matches are slated to start at 9 a.m.
Despite being picked to finish fifth in the preseason Big Sky Conference coaches, the senior laden Bobcats enter Friday's match with the Grizzlies undefeated in league action. Montana State (11-3, 7-0) has not beaten Montana (2-16, 1-6) since the 2008-09 campaign.
"It's going to be huge," said MSU senior Laura Middel, who plays at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. "I don't think we've beaten the Griz in a long time, so that's going to be an exciting opportunity for us. Northern Arizona is a tough team, the best in the Big Sky Conference so far, they've already claimed their Big Sky spot, so it's going to be interesting."
Northern Arizona (14-4, 8-0) is also unbeaten in conference play after knocking off Idaho 4-3 last Sunday in Flagstaff. MSU, NAU and Idaho are all battling for the top seed in the six-team Big Sky Conference tournament, April 28-30 in Phoenix, Arizona.
MSU boasts four seniors in the starting lineup along with junior Angelina Philippova and freshman Chloe Goyette. Goyette, a product of Yakima, Wash., is 12-2 overall and 7-0 in Big Sky matches playing at No. 1 singles. Also notching ten victories on the season are senior Jessica Brycki (11-3, 5-2), Philippova (10-3, 6-1) and senior Naomi Holopainen (10-4, 6-1).
Goyette and Middel have recorded a 7-1 overall mark and a 4-1 league ledger at the top doubles spot, while Brycki and Naomi Holopainen have identical records at No. 2 doubles.
Following this weekend's play, the Bobcats will travel to Eastern Washington and Idaho to conclude the regular-season.
