The Bobcat golf team makes its first appearance of the spring when it heads to Sedona, Ariz., to compete on the Oakcreek Country Club golf course
The Montana State women's golf team makes its first appearance of the spring when the Bobcats begin play at the Red Rocks Invitational Saturday in Sedona, Ariz. The tournament will feature back-to-back days of 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts, with 36 holes scheduled for Saturday and 18 on Sunday.
"This is a good starting tournament because we face seven Big Sky schools right away, so we can see how we're stacking up against everybody," Montana State head coach Brittany Basye said. "I've been talking to the girls about us having some real competition. It's a good place to start off at and see where we're at in the conference."
The tournament hosted by Northern Arizona features a double-digit team playing field with Big Sky Conference members Idaho State, Northern Colorado, North Dakota, Sacramento State, Southern Utah and Weber State all in the mix.
Seven Bobcats will be competing on the Par-72 6,190-yard Oakcreek Country Club golf course. Junior Jaylee Tait, freshman Kelly Hooper, senior Janelle Reali, freshman Coral Schulz and sophomore Natassja Meredith are penciled in to compete in the MSU lineup. Sophomore Clare Dittemore and freshman Delaney Elliott will also participate in the 54-hole tournament as individuals.
"Nobody has played this golf course on our team," Basye said. "I'm excited about that because there's no expectations. It's not a super difficult golf course, but it's a fun course and usually is in really good shape. The greens could potentially be a little harder and not quite as soft, just because of the cooler temperatures there, so that could potentially change up our game plans a little bit."
MSU will play in six meets this spring with the season culminating at the Big Sky Conference Championship in Boulder City, Nev., from April 21-23.
The Bobcats competed in four tournaments this fall, with the squad earning a season-best third-place finish at Santa Clara's Colby Invitational on Nov. 1. Three Bobcats earned at least one top-20 showing during the first four meets of the year. Jaylee Tait earned MSU's lone Big Sky weekly honor this fall by finishing third at the Colby Invite with a 10-over-par 226.
"What I'm excited about the most is how we respond since we've been hitting inside in the new facility we've been working in," Basye said. "I just want to see the short games chipping, putting and even hitting because that will be a little different. There really are no expectations, but maybe a little bit more because we've had the better facility to practice in. I'm hoping that trickles to some earlier, better rounds."
