Bobcat Doubles Team Knocks off No. 6 Seed; Falls in Round of 16

The Montana State women’s doubles tandem of Laura Middel and Chloe Goyette finished their run at the 2016 ITA Regional Championships, but not before knocking off the No. 6 seeded duo from the University of Denver.
The Montana State women's doubles tandem of Laura Middel and Chloe Goyette finished their run at the 2016 ITA Regional Championships, but not before knocking off the No. 6 seeded duo from the University of Denver.
On Friday morning, the Bobcats fell in a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) decision to UTEP's Vivenne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz in the round of 16. On Thursday, the MSU pair defeated the No. 6 seeded doubles team from the University of Denver 8-7 (7-3). It was the farthest a Montana State doubles team has advanced at an ITA regional.
"I'm proud of their effort and getting better," said MSU head coach Jon Reeves of Middel and Goyette. "They came out much quicker and stronger from point one. We have to keep learning from lessons so we don't repeat the same errors. We let too many 40-15 point leads get away from us. We had many opportunities to control the match."
In singles action, Middel and Goyette each won their opening draws, before falling in the second round. No. 3 seed Andrea Leblanc of New Mexico defeated Goyette 6-3, 6-0, while Middel dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to UNM's Ludivine Burguiere, who was seeded No. 15.
"Overall we have had a good fall," Reeves said. "Chloe winning the top singles flight in two tournaments and partnering with Laura Mary for a doubles tournament title is a demonstration of where this team is headed. Laura Middel has had a good fall reaching a singles tournament final where she played Goyette. She is continuing to demonstrate her improvement along with her incredible team leadership and competitiveness.
"We have a lot to work to do between now and the beginning of January when we begin dual match play," Reeves stated. "We begin our eight-hour phase in a week. The team will be hitting the weight room hard and individual work will begin. It's an important time to stay on top of our progress so we are ready to roll right after Christmas break."
