MSU battles before falling to national power Cougars
Brigham Young swept to a 7-0 win over Montana State in the Bobcats' men's tennis season opener in Provo on Friday, but MSU coach Jared Burnham saw positive signs.
"I thought we had some good performances," Burnham said. "It was easy to tell that BYU had played several matches and it was our first time in competition this spring. Niklas (Brandes) and Javy (Martin-Morillas) played well, and I was pleased with (freshman) Dylan Harvala."
BYU's Scott Monroe earned a straight sets win over MSU's Andre Napoliatano, a sophomore transfer, at No. 1 singles, but Niklas Brandes lost in three (6-7, 6-3, 6-0) to Jeremy Bourgeois at No. 2. Martin-Morillas posted possibly MSU's most competitive effort of the day one ladder spot down, fall 7-6, 4-6, 7-5, while Harvala also lost in three sets.
"We have plenty to work on," Burnham said, "plenty of room for improvement. We have to get a lot better on deuce points. But for a first match I thought the effort was good."
Montana State plays at Utah on Saturday at 12 noon.
