Hot Hornet second half costs Bobcats
Sacramento State used a late 7-0 spurt to break open a close contest and pull away from Montana State 75-59 in Sacramento on Thursday.
The Bobcats trailed by just five points with six minutes remaining after Marcus Colbert hit one of his three three-pointers on the night, but a layup by Mikh McKinney and a jumper by Cody Demps pushed the Hornets' lead to nine. After a Bobcat turnover, Dylan Garrity hit a three-pointer to seal MSU's fate.
"We played 30 good minutes of basketball," said Bobcat coach Brian Fish, "and a bad 10 minutes. We made some mistakes defensively late in the game that really cost us."
The Bobcats stayed close to the Big Sky-leading Hornets for most of the contest, trailing just 36-33 at halftime and leading 42-41 early in the second half. The Bobcats shot 43% in the first half but just 32% in the second, while Sacramento State got away from the visitors by shooting 58% after the intermission.
McKinney led all players with 23 points and eight assists and five steals, while Garrity scored 18. Four Bobcats scored in double-digits, with Colbert scoring 13, Stephan Holm and Eric Norman 12 each, and Michael Dison adding 10. Danny Robison grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds for the Cats, who out-rebounded Sac State 35-to-32.
Montana State falls to 4-16 on the season, 1-7 in league play, with the loss. The Hornets held onto first place in the Big Sky with the win, raising their record to 14-6 overall, 8-1 in the Big Sky. Montana State visits Portland State Saturday night, while Sac State hosts Montana.
