Bobcats look to climb back into win column
A pair of teams hoping to put Thursday's games in the rear view mirror get together in Portland Saturday, when the Bobcats visit Portland State at 8:05 pm MT in the Stott Center.
Montana State (4-16 overall, 1-7 Big Sky) arrives in Portland having lost two straight and 11 of its last 12, while Portland State dropped a 73-54 home contest to Montana on Thursday. The Vikings remain in the thick of the Big Sky Conference intrigue, part of a five-team knot lodged squarely in the middle of the standings with anywhere from three to five league victories.
Guard DaShaun Wiggins leads the Vikings with 15.5 points a game, ninth in the Big Sky. The slick-shooting senior thrives on consistency, with at least 10 points in 17 of PSU's 19 games. Wiggins' backcourt-mate Gary Winston, also a senior, contributes 14.7 points and 4.6 assists a game in league play. Portland State has been one of the more efficient teams during Big Sky play at taking care of the ball. The Vikings stand third in assist/turnover ratio, paced by its veteran backcourt.
Like their counterpart Saturday, the Bobcats ride the efforts of guards Marcus Colbert and Michael Dison. The two have combined to score 40.2% of MSU's points and together have assisted on 32% of the team's made shots. Danny Robison grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in MSU's loss at league-leading Sacramento State on Thursday, while freshman forward Zach Green dished out a career-high four assists.
While MSU has won its last two trips to the Stott Center, that bucks the historical trend in a big way. The Vikings are 147-55 in games played on the Portland State campus since joining the Big Sky in 1996-97.
After Saturday's game, the Cats return home for the program's first league tilt against Idaho in nearly 20 years on Thursday.
