Kenny Dodd caps comeback with win at No. 6 singles
Call him Comeback Kenny or Kenny Clutch, or label it That Old Kenny Dodd Magic.
By any name, it was on full display at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center Sunday afternoon and played a huge hand in Montana State's 4-3 home win over Big Sky men's tennis powerhouse Sacramento State. Bobcat senior Kenny Dodd won a memorable 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 match against Oliver Andersen at No. 6 singles to clinch the Bobcat victory.
"That's Kenny," MSU coach Jared Burnham said of the player who has won several matches in similar fashion for the Bobcats this season. "It doesn't matter what the score is, Kenny's going to keep playing."
Which was a good thing for the Bobcats on Sunday, because Dodd found himself trailing 5-3 in the first set before rallying for the win. After dropping the second set – Anderson broke serve twice – Dodd turned an early service break in set three into a landslide, and cruised to the finish line.
"It was awkward," Burnham said of the first set between Dodd and Andersen. "They both played well at times, but they both played rough at times. Somehow, Kenny won that first set."
The Nampa, Idaho, product said the serve played a key role in his match. "Those first two games (in the first set) definitely set the tone for the match," Dodd said. "I got broken off a double fault, then I broke him. I think we both got a little confidence that we could break serve, it was just a matter of who was going to hold serve more often. I knew I just needed to hold serve one time more than him."
Dodd's match-deciding showdown was set up by MSU's solid doubles play. The Bobcats won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 1-0 lead. "We played really well in doubles again," Burnham said. "That's been important for us."
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead when Diego Campos earned a 6-4, 5-0 (retired) victory over xxxxxxxx at No. 4 singles, but the Hornets rallied with wins at the one, two and three ladder spots. Harry James earned an easy 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 to set up Dodd's deciding match.
Burnham found several individual efforts impressive on Sunday. "Diego had a great win, and it's going to sound funny but Nik (Brandes) played really well. (His opponent) is a (very good) player. Harry was really good today, and Javy (Martin Morillas) had a match point, and it could have gotten out of control after we lost that. But the guys did a great job."
That set the stage for Dodd, who said in some ways he simply out-lasted Andersen. "I was just trying to keep the ball in the court," he said. "It was a matter of putting one more ball in the court than he did."
Montana State raised its record to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in Big Sky play with the win. The Bobcats' match against Portland State on Saturday was cancelled after the Vikings opted not to travel from Missoula for Saturday's match due to road conditions. The Hornets fall to 2-8 overall, 0-2 in league play, after being swept on the Montana trip.
Sunday's win was MSU's first over Sacramento State since 2006.
