Kenny Dodd seals win at no. six singles
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Montana State's men's tennis match against Montana came down to Kenny Dodd Saturday, and the Bobcats' no. six singles player didn't let his team down.
The senior from Nampa, Idaho, won a dramatic 8-6 second set tie-breaker over Montana's Zach Drost to boost the Bobcats to a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Grizzlies in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. "Kenny Dodd is nails at the end," said MSU coach Jared Burnham.
Dodd's win capped a comeback effort for the defending Big Sky regular season co-champion Bobcats, who jump into conference play next weekend. MSU won the doubles point but trailed 3-1 after singles wins by Montana's Andrew Warren (over Javier Martin Morillas at no. two), Tomasz Soltyka (over Markus Schleuter at no. three) and Semion Branzburg (over Diego Campos at no. four).
Bobcat junior Niklas Brandes started the Bobcats down the comeback trail by winning in straight sets over Montana's Mikolaj Caruk at no. one. "I thought they both played very well," Burnham said of the Brandes-Caruk match. "They've played each other a lot of times, but I think it's the best they've both played against each other. Niklas is moving really well, serving better, hitting his backhand better. He's playing very well."
Brandes' win set up the late-match heroics at the bottom of the lineup. James dispatched of Peter Minnagh-Fleming in straight sets, but Dodd's win provided fireworks. He won the opening set 7-5, then captured the clincher 7-6 in a tie-breaker.
Burnham credited his team's effort in doubles play to set up the win. "That was huge to win the doubles point," he said. "I think it's the first time we've beaten Montana in doubles in a while."
The non-conference match vaults MSU into Big Sky Conference play next weekend. The Cats host Portland State on Saturday and defending Big Sky Champion Sacramento State on Sunday.
