Despite playing one of its better games in recent weeks, the Montana State women's basketball team couldn't overcome a 44-13 Northern Colorado free throw advantage, dropping a 62-51 decision to the Bears, Saturday afternoon in Butler-Hancock Pavilion.
“I thought we had great fight,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “The difference came at the line. We didn't get the little things done, and that's something we'll need to clean up.”
Despite going to the line 44 times, Northern Colorado (13-9, 10-3) converted just 25 makes from the charity stripe, while Montana State (14-9, 8-6) connected on 11-of-13 tosses.
Trailing 7-6 at the 12-minute, 40-second mark of the opening period, Northern Colorado went on a 17-8 run and took a 10-point margin into intermission.
The Bears built its largest lead at 51-38 with 7:28 remaining following a Lauren Oosdyke free throw. The Bobcats rattled off a 9-1 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to pull to within five-points with 4:41 left, but would get no closer. Latisha Adams sparked the Bobcat run with four points.
Northern Colorado's D'shara Strange secured the win for the Bears, connecting on five-of-nine free throws in the final one-minute, 24-seconds.
Rachel Semansky led Montana State with her 22nd career double-double recording a team-high 15 points and ten rebounds. Also in double-figures for the Bobcats were Adams 11, and Ashley Brumwell 10.
Montana State will host Idaho State on Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
