MSU rode hot hands by young players to the triumph
BOZEMAN, Mont. –Montana State freshman Diego Camps overcame a 5-2 first set deficit to post a 7-5, 7-5 win over Portland State's Nick Fracchia, clinching the Bobcats' 5-2 Big Sky dual win over Portland State on Saturday.
Campos' win not only sealed MSU's dual win with what Phillips called “really gutsy tennis,” but it came after he had teamed with Alberto Fuentes to post an 8-7 win in doubles competition which helped give MSU the doubles point. The Bobcats swept all three matches to win the doubles point, then won four of the six singles matches for the victory.
“We got a good win” on Saturday, said MSU coach Mike Phillips. “This was important because it put us in good position in the conference, and also gives us confidence going down the stretch.”
While Phillips lauded the victory as a solid team effort in which “everyone played great,” MSU's freshman performed extremely well. Two of the team's freshmen, Campos and Markus Schleuter, won singles matches, while Schleuter joined classmate Prithiv Sivasubramaniam in one of the most impressive performances of the day. The two rookies won an 8-0 doubles match that Phillips called “amazing.”
Montana State raised its record to 4-1 in Big Sky play, 8-11 overall. MSU hosts Montana, Weber State and NAU next weekend.
