Mateus Ceolin
- Title:
- Head Men's Tennis Coach
Mateus Ceolin enters his first season as Montana State Men’s Tennis Head Coach. Ceolin was a student-athlete and played tennis for the Bobcats (2015-19), graduating with a bachelor's degree in physical education and a minor in coaching in 2019. He was also part of the coaching staff during the 2019-2020 school year working closely with former Big Sky championship coach Trey Morris.
Prior to returning to Montana State, Ceolin spent two seasons at the University of Arizona working under the guardianship of one of the most dynamic coaches in college tennis, Clancy Shields. At UA, Ceolin helped the Wildcats to what was considered one of the most successful two years in program history. Ceolin helped the Cats to the program's first Pac 12 Tournament Championship and its third consecutive Pac 12 regular season championship. He helped guide Colton Smith, Jay Friend and Gustaf Strom to All-Pac 12 First Team honors, Nick Lagaev and Herman Hoeyeraal to All-Pac 12 Second Team laurels and Casper Christensen to All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention honors.
The Wildcats posted an impressive 26-4 record, defeating 16 ranked opponents on the 2023-2024 campaign. Smith and Friend were named Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year, the first pair in program history to win the award, and Strom became the program's second-ever Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In his first year with the Cats (2022-2023), Ceolin helped coach the team to a 14-0 home record, the team’s second ever Sweet 16 appearance and a back-to-back regular season conference championship. He coached four All-Conference players in his first season as volunteer assistant coach.
Ceolin joined the Wildcats from Cameron University where he worked as a graduate assistant coach for their men's tennis program from fall 2020 to spring 2022, and where he also earned his master's in psychology. He was nominated for ITA Assistant Coach of the Year for the South Central Region in the latter season.
In Ceolin's first season with the Aggies, the team advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA DII tournament, finished with an overall record of 17-13, was named ITA All-Academic and had a doubles pair finish at No. 11 in the U.S. During his second and final season at Cameron, the team appeared in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA DII tournament, named ITA All-Academic again and one of their doubles pairs finished in first place of the South Central Region rankings.
After graduating from Montana State he wasted no time pursuing his passion for coaching when offered an assistant coach position for the men's tennis team at his alma matter under then-head coach Trey Morris. That season with the Bobcats was abbreviated due to COVID-19, but the team finished with an overall record of 5-4.
Ceolin is married to his wife Emily, who he met while working at the Bozeman, Mont. YMCA summer camp. They share a dog named Marshall.
