“We had another great weekend of competition in Boise,” Barrett said. “It is exciting to see the progress we are making as a team and individually, and we look forward to carrying this momentum into regionals next week.”
First-year Montana State head women's tennis coach Hailey Barrett was pleased with her team's progress following play at the Barb Chandler Classic hosted by Boise State at the Appleton Tennis over the weekend.
"We had another great weekend of competition in Boise," Barrett said. "It is exciting to see the progress we are making as a team and individually, and we look forward to carrying this momentum into regionals next week."
Four Montana State players saw action over the course of three days in the dynamic duo format that also featured squads from BSU, Idaho State and Weber State. Each match consisted of one doubles contest (8-game pro set), along with two full singles matches, with one point awarded for each match.
Angel Bean and Terezie Stverakova opened play in the Blue Flight with a 2-1 victory over Idaho State's Sydney Morris and Veronika Zarovna. The ISU tandem captured the double points, before Bean and Stverakova each won singles matches in three sets. Bean rallied from a first set loss to Morris, posting 7-6(0), 7-6(0) in sets two and three for the win. Stverakova also came from behind after dropping her opening set.
Bean and Stverakova lost a 3-0 decision to Boise State on Saturday, and a 2-1 decision to ISU's Millie Day and Emmy Richards on Sunday. MSU's lone point against the Bengals came in doubles action.
MSU's Kavya Khirwar and Lola Bean combined in the White Flight. The duo opened play with a 2-1 win over Weber State's Aleksandra Bozinkovska and Wencong Song. Khirwar and Bean won the doubles match 8-5, before Khirwar dispatched Bozinkovska 6-2, 6-2 to secure the victory.
Saturday, Khirwar and Bean dropped a 2-1 decision to Boise State, with its lone point coming as the tandem captured doubles in an 8-5 decision. The duo rebounded with a 2-1 win over Idaho State's Evelina Zhuk and Victories Grymalska on Sunday. Khirwar and Bean won the doubles point 8-1, before Khirwar knocked off Zhuk 6-2, 6-4.
"Kavya and Lola had a very successful weekend winning all three doubles matches and earning runner up in their flight," Berrett said. "Kavya also won two of her three singles matches to make it a successful weekend for her overall."
MSU competes at the ITA Mountain Region Championships, Oct. 7-11, in Provo, Utah.
