Bobcats look to continue early-season success following Yellowstone Intercollegiate victory
BOZEMAN, Mont. --- The Montana State women's golf team is gearing up for its third tournament in as many weeks to open the 2025-26 season, traveling to Washington for the Kalispel Invitational. The tournament will take place on Monday and Tuesday at the Kalispel Country Club in Spokane, marking the midway point of the fall season for the Bobcats.
The Kalispel Invitational will begin with 36 continuous holes of play on Monday followed by 18 holes on Tuesday. Action at Kalispel Country Club will begin at 10 a.m. MDT on Monday and 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with both rounds kicking off in a shotgun start.
"We're excited to be headed to Spokane to play Kalispel CC," head coach Brittany Basye said. "It's a great track that will test our aiming spots; it is narrow. Coming off a win, our expectations are high, but we need to keep competing and sticking to our game plans. We want to keep the golf course in front of us, play hard, and compete until the final putt."
The Bobcats are one of 14 teams set to compete at the Kalispel Invitational, hosted by Eastern Washington and the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. Montana State will face a familiar group of foes as Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, and Portland State join the Cats in Spokane after squaring off at the Yellowstone Intercollegiate last week. Cal State Bakersfield, LC State, Santa Clara, Seattle University, Tarleton State, Utah Valley, and Whitworth will also appear on the par-72, 6,068-yard course, rounding out the competitors vying for the team title.
The Kalispel Invitational comes on the heels of a historic week for the Bobcats, who hosted their first tournament in Bozeman since 2012 last Monday and Tuesday. Montana State earned its first team victory since 2002 at the Yellowstone Intercollegiate, posting its lowest 54-hole score in program history with a 16-under 848 (282-285-281) to win by 15 strokes. Eva Heinz claimed her first career win with an impressive 9-under 207, highlighted by her school- and conference-record opening round of 62 to lead a group of five Bobcats who finished in the top 10. Heinz was named Big Sky Women's Golfer of the Week following her performance at Riverside Country Club.
Montana State will debut a new lineup for the Kalispel Invitational as seven golfers make the trip to Spokane. The team lineup will include Heinz, Lauren Greeny, Maddie Montoya, Norah Seidl, and Sailor Graham while Ashleigh Wilson and Lauren Nau will compete individually. Graham is set to appear in the team lineup for the first time after placing fifth while competing as an individual at last week's Yellowstone Intercollegiate, an event that marked her collegiate debut.
"We are taking the same seven players from our home event, so I'm excited to see who's ready to bring it again and keep the pedal down," Basye said. "We need to keep fighting for each stroke and play our games."
Monday's tournament marks the Cats' return to Spokane for the first time since the 2023-24 season when they competed at the Eastern Washington-hosted Eagle Invitational at Indian Canyon Golf Course. The Bobcats placed 10th in the tournament as Jordan Briggs led MSU in a tie for 10th place (227) while competing individually. Heinz, then a freshman, was Montana State's top finisher in the team lineup and will compete in her second career tournament in Spokane when the Bobcats tee off on Monday. Seniors Greeny and Montoya, who helped guide the Bobcats to a runner-up finish in the 2022 iteration of the Eagle Invitational, will provide further experience for MSU as they make their third trip to Spokane with the Bobcats.
Monday's tournament will mark all seven Bobcats' first time competing at Kalispel Golf and Country Club, which is located on the north side of Spokane.
Montana State is paired with golfers from Gonzaga, Santa Clara, and Seattle U for Monday's first and second rounds and will tee off from holes 12 through 15 in a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Wilson and Nau are paired with individuals from Gonzaga, Whitworth, and LC State and will begin each round on holes 16 and 17, respectively. Live scoring will be available at scoreboard.clippd.com.
