Montana State women's tennis Senior Day went according to script. All four Bobcat seniors had a hand in MSU's 6-1 win over Eastern Washington in the final match of the regular season, Friday afternoon in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
"We wanted all of our seniors to play in some capacity and it's cool the way it all worked out," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "The doubles point came down to two seniors at No. 3, and then we had another senior, J (Jojo Bach), clinch the match at No. 3 singles.
"It was a perfect day for our seniors," she added.
Montana State (10-10, 4-4) opened doubles play behind the quick start of its No. 1 pairing Bach and Meg McCarty, who cruised to a 6-1 victory. Eastern Washington (4-13, 2-5) took No. 2 doubles, forcing the first point of the contest to be decided at No. 3.
MSU seniors Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Andrea Cuquerella, playing together for just the second time this spring, jumped out to a 4-2 advantage. EWU then turned the table taking three of four games to even the set at 5-5, but the Bobcats broke back to go up 6-5 before clinching the point behind Cuquerella's serve.
McCarty, a Bozeman product, opened singles play with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win over Leandra Nizetic in the No. 2 spot, followed by Garcia-Reboredo's 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Isabella Foshee at No. 1 on the ladder. The Canary Islands native held off Foshee in a first set tiebreaker. After spotting Foshee the opening point, Garcia-Reboredo rattled off a 7-1 run winning the opening set on a big forehand volley, giving MSU a 3-0 cushion.
Bach clinched the match for the Bobcats rallying from a first set loss at No. 3 with a pair of decisive 6-2 wins over Kenzington Mann. Montana State added victories at Nos. 5 and 6 by Angle Bean and senior Mia Ljubas, respectively, to complete it scoring.
With the victory, MSU secured the #4 seed at next week's Big Sky Conference Tournament in Phoenix. The win also knocked Montana out of tournament contention. The Bobcats face either Portland State or Idaho State in opening round action based on Sunday's outcome of EWU at Montana. A Montana victory matches MSU with PSU, while an Eastern Washington win gives ISU the #5 seed.
"Getting a solid win is important heading into the tournament," Woodburn said. "We're happy to be in, but we're not going to be satisfied unless we do great things. Having this momentum is big for us."
Big Sky Tournament play begins Thursday, April 24 at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
