“We started out with really solid doubles, so that was a positive for our team,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. “We have been working hard on it, and it was fun to see the team trust our doubles and believe in the big moments.”
– Montana State opened its match against Northern Arizona sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early lead, but the Lumberjacks exploded in singles play to record a 6-1 victory over the Bobcats in MSU's Big Sky Conference opener on Friday morning.
Montana State's (6-5, 0-1) top duo of No. 42-ranked Jojo Bach and Meg McCarty notched a 7-5 win over Northern Arizona's (6-3, 2-0) Laura Duhl and Patryc Niewiadomska, 7-5, to get the Bobcats on the board.
"We started out with really solid doubles, so that was a positive for our team," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "We have been working hard on it, and it was fun to see the team trust our doubles and believe in the big moments."
NAU turned the table in singles play sweeping all six spots on the ladder. MSU forced three sets at No. 1 where Daryna Shoshyna rallied for a 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7) over Marta Garcia-Reboredo.
"NAU came ready to play," Woodburn added. "They outcompeted us in singles. They played better on the big points. We will learn from today and use it as a teaching moment. We know what we are capable of and must keep trusting the process and believing on the deuce point."
MSU plays at Grand Canyon on Saturday at 10 a.m., in Phoenix.
