McCarty and Bach, ranked No. 42 in the latest ITA listings, opened the match with a 6-0 sweep of Nika Beukers and Kasumi Hirayama.
Led by its nationally ranked No. 1 doubles tandem of Meg McCarty and Jojo Bach, the Montana State women's tennis squad cruised to a 7-0 win over Portland State to open its Big Sky Conference home season, Friday morning.
McCarty and Bach, ranked No. 42 in the latest ITA listings, opened the match with a 6-0 sweep of Nika Beukers and Kasumi Hirayama. The Bobcats were without the services of sophomore all-conference selection Hudson Hawkins, which forced head coach Suzie Woodburn to mix the ladder at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.
Seniors Marta Garcia-Reboredo and Andrea Cuquerella combined for a 6-4 decision over Hana Abdelhamid and Scarlett Perkins at No. 3 to clinch the opening point for Montana State (7-6, 1-1). Portland State (3-6, 2-2) led at No. 2 before it went unfinished after the Bobcats secured the point.
"We had to be creative and put together a doubles team that hadn't played together since their freshmen year with Andrea (Cuquerella) and Marta," Woodburn said. "And Angel (Bean) and Kavya (Khirwar) hadn't played together since the fall, so it was nice to see them battling.
"We have good doubles, and it doesn't matter who we're playing with," Woodburn added. "We just trust our system. It was awesome to see Meg and J (Bach) with their textbook doubles and No. 3 doubles got the job done."
Bobcat newcomer Nia Gelashvili opened singles play in quick fashion defeating Hirayama 6-0, 6-2, followed by Bach's 6-3, 6-1 decision over Nene Uemura. Leading 3-0, MSU clinched the match as McCarty recorded 6-1, 6-4 win over Abdelhamid at the No. 2 spot.
MSU closed out the contest with victories by Garcia-Reboredo, Bean, and Khirwar at Nos. 1, 5 and 6, respectively.
"We committed to our tennis and played free on the big moments," Woodburn said. "I thought we executed the big points well. It was nice to be home. Portland State is a good team and was great to see how we competed against them."
MSU plays at St. Mary's, Wednesday, March 19, and Sacramento State, March 21.
