Strong winds dictate play at Mountain Classic Match Play, with 'Cats narrowly falling to Vikings on final hole
PALM DESERT, Calif. -- Montana State women's golf got individual match play wins from Becca Tschetter and Lauren Greeny, but fell 3-2 to Portland State in a consolation clash at Mountain Classic Match Play on Tuesday in Palm Desert, California.
Facing difficult weather conditions with strong winds at the Classic Club, the 'Cats went down to the wire with the Vikings, falling in the fifth and deciding match on the final hole of the day.
"Today was very tough with the wind howling all day," head coach Brittany Basye said. "We battled all day with Portland State, and it came down to that last hole. Days like these you just have to keep battling and keep focus."
The Bobcats got their first point thanks to Becca Tschetter earning a dominant win over Portland State's Cynthia Ong. The graduate student from Minot, North Dakota, secured the victory by going 5-up with three holes to play.
Elsewhere, Lauren Greeny was down a hole with two to play against Portland State's Averey Kagayama, but closed with a comeback flurry to edge out the win.
The junior from Pullman, Washington, carded a par to Kagayma's bogie on the 17th to pull herself square, then in clutch fashion birdied the 18th to secure a win and keep Montana State alive.
Yet, Portland State's Bayler Brundage squeaked out a late win on the 17th hole to overcome Scarlet Weidig, and the Vikings got wins from Momo Udom over Hannah Boraas and Payten Shimizu over Maddie Montoya to finish the deal.
Montana State closes out action at the eight-team match play tournament going against Wyoming on Wednesday in another consolation match.
The Cowgirls fell 4-1 to North Dakota State on Tuesday and 4-1 to Northern Arizona on Monday.
