“After the dropping doubles point, I told our girls against a good team like Sacramento State, you’re going to have moments when you need to grab the opportunities they give you, and if you don’t, they’re going to steal it back,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn.
Sacramento State dominated doubles action, but Montana State flipped the switch capturing the top 4 singles spots in straight sets, including two tiebreakers, en route to a 5-2 win over the Hornets on Sunday morning in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
"After the dropping doubles point, I told our girls against a good team like Sacramento State, you're going to have moments when you need to grab the opportunities they give you, and if you don't, they're going to steal it back," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "I thought our kids did an excellent job responding to the challenge."
Montana State (12-5, 3-3) senior Jazmin Lerman cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Elena Mercioiu at No. 4 to even the match at one-all. Bozeman product Meg McCarty quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 3 over Lou Baudouin giving the Bobcats a lead it would not relinquish.
"I felt beginning with Nos. 1-4, that was the most consistent we've been with our game play this season," Woodburn said. "We've been working on really believing in our tennis and in the big moments trusting what we do best. Everyone did an excellent job buying into that this afternoon."
Freshman Paula Dougherty put the Bobcats up 3-1 with a 6-2, 7-6(2) win at No. 3. The native of Raleigh, N.C. jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the second set tiebreaker and took the match as Sacramento State's (14-6, 3-2) Maddy Ferreros was unable to return Dougherty's serve.
"Paula was on today," Woodburn said. "It was fun to see her stick to it and commit to it even when it got close. Meg (McCarty) was able to go to her magic purse, which was full, and use a variety of shots to disrupt her opponent, and Jaz (Lerman) played awesome tennis, and for her to get a dominant win was huge."
Marta Garcia-Reboredo, who has been MSU's top player of the past three seasons, used her experience to clinch the match with a 7-6(5), 6-0 decision over Mayya Gorbunova at the top of the ladder. Garcia-Reboredo won the pivotal opening set tiebreaker holding on to an early 6-2 cushion, finishing the set on a forehand winner.
"Marta came ready to go," Woodburn said. "She had a tough match on Friday, and she responded today. After getting the first set tiebreaker she held the momentum and just kept putting her foot on the gas."
The Hornets took its lone point in singles action at No. 5, before Bobcat freshman Hudson Hawkins put a stamp on the contest with a 6-3, 7-6(1) win No. 6. Hawkins, a native of Las Vegas, controlled the second set tiebreaker behind a big service game, completing MSU's day with a big return of serve.
Montana State has captured six of its last seven matches and coupled with its win over Northern Arizona on Friday, moved into sixth in the Big Sky Conference standings. The top six schools advance to the league's postseason tournament.
