Four Bobcats Earn All-Big Sky Kudos

Montana State junior Marta Garcia-Reboredo garnered First Team All-Big Sky Conference honors in both singles and doubles, while three freshmen – Paula Dougherty, Meg McCarty, and Hudson Hawkins- also received all-league recognition, the Big Sky office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Garcia-Reboredo, a product of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, was one of four unanimous selections to the first team in singles action. On the season, she recorded an 11-8 overall mark and a 5-3 ledger in Big Sky play at the top spot on MSU's ladder. Over the last ten matches, Garcia-Reboredo has gone 7-3 overall.
"I'm incredibly proud of Marta," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "She worked really hard over the summer and holidays to earn this honor. Marta has been so dedicated, and always asking for more, and she has become a fantastic leader. It's been fun to watch her confidence bloom."
In doubles action, Garcia-Reboredo combined with Hawkins at No. 1 where the tandem notched a 13-6 overall record and a Big Sky best 7-1 finish. The twosome captured ten of its last 12 matches. Garcia-Reboredo and Hawkins were one of two pairs earning unanimous first team accolades. The other doubles squad was Weber State's Megan Davies and Ana Moret, who Garcia-Reboredo and Hawkins defeated 7-5 on April 14.
"It's been fun to watch Marta and Hudson trusting in the game plan in doubles," Woodburn said. "They complement each other on the court and have been playing solid, aggressive tennis. They've played a lot of close matches and always find a way to win."
Dougherty, a native of Raleigh, N.C., and McCarty, a Bozeman product, were named to the All-Big Sky Singles Second Team. Dougherty went 7-10 overall playing at No. 2 and registered a 5-3 record in Big Sky action. Two of her three losses in league play came against Idaho State and Montana, both in three sets.
McCarty matched Garcia-Reboredo with a team-high 11 victories in singles play. She finished the regular season 11-6 overall, including a 9-6 mark at No. 3. In Big Sky play, McCarty posted a 5-3 ledger. Two of her three losses came in three sets, as well.
"Paula did a good job early in the season trying to find what worked best for her," Woodburn stated. "And once she did, she was dialed in. She continues to improve every time she steps on the court.
"Meg is just a phenomenal player who is one of the smartest I've ever coached," Woodburn added. "Her strategy and tactics are always spot on, and she is just a winner."
Montana State opens Big Sky Tournament play against Weber State, Thursday, 9 a.m. (MT), at the Phoenix Tennis Center.
