Hawkins Named Big Sky Tennis Player of the Week

The honor is the third for the Bobcats this season and the third time an MSU freshman has captured the weekly honor. Hawkins joins Meg McCarty and Angel Bean for Big Sky recognition this spring.
Montana State freshman Hudson Hawkins has been named Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday morning.
The honor is the third for the Bobcats this season and the third time an MSU freshman has captured the weekly honor. Hawkins joins Meg McCarty and Angel Bean for Big Sky recognition this spring.
Hawkins, a product of Las Vegas, Nev., has been one of the hottest players on the Big Sky women's circuit over the past three weeks. In singles action, she is currently on a five-match winning streak, which included a pair of wins last weekend. Playing at No. 6 singles, Hawkins defeated Northern Arizona's Laura Duhl 6-2, 6-2, and Sacramento State's Best Lee 6-3, 7-6(1).
"It's been really fun to see Hudson grow in her singles play," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "She has gained a lot of confidence from her doubles. She is competing so well, being aggressive and using her big serve in executing points."
In addition, Hawkins has combined with Marta Garcia-Reboredo at No. 1 doubles. The tandem is one of the top duos in the Big Sky posting a 5-1 conference ledger. Hawkins and Garcia-Reboredo are 11-6 overall and have won eight of their last ten matches. Last Friday, the pair dispatched NAU's Daryna Shoshyna and Dolavee Tumthong 6-3 to propel the Bobcats to a 4-3 win, breaking a 13-match losing streak to the Lumberjacks.
"When I first watched Hudson when we were recruiting her, the thing that stood out in her doubles play was the swag and confidence she brought to the court," Woodburn said. "We knew she was something special. It's been great to see her compete at a high level and on a consistent basis this season."
Hawkins shares the weekly honor with Montana's Hailey Murphy.
MSU hosts Weber State on Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
