McCarty Paces Bobcats at Gonzaga Invite

After dropping her first match on Friday, McCarty rattled off three consecutive victories, including a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 win over Portland State’s Elizabeth Strongina to capture the back draw singles title.
Bozeman native Meg McCarty guided Montana State women's tennis in its final tournament of the fall season, claiming the Gonzaga Invitational back draw title in both singles and doubles, at GU's Stevens Center over the weekend.
After dropping her first match on Friday, McCarty rattled off three consecutive victories, including a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 win over Portland State's Elizabeth Strongina to capture the back draw singles title.
McCarty combined with Mia Ljubas in doubles action. The Bobcat duo lost its first match to GU's Emily Robertson and Safien Boulonois in a tiebreaker, before winning three straight including a 7-5 decision over Gonzaga's Norhan Hesham and Brooke Bittner in the back draw championship match.
"Meg competed really well and found ways to score points," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "She played her tennis. It was also great to see Meg and Mia (Ljubas) pull out some tough wins. They trusted the game plan and it paid off winning the back draw."
The GU tournament completed MSU's fall season.
"We had a great fall, and we got better with each tournament," Woodburn commented. "We learned who we want to be come spring. We can be a gritty team that responds well to challenges. We look forward to ramping things back up in early January."
MSU opens its 2025 spring season at Utah on Jan. 17 in Salt Lake City.
