Bobcats kick off 2023-2024 at Timpanogos Collegiate Classic hosted by Utah Valley
BOZEMAN, Montana – Fresh off one of the most successful seasons in program history, the Montana State women's golf team begins the 2023-2024 campaign this weekend at the Timpanogos Collegiate Classic, held at Timpanogos Golf Course in Provo, Utah.
Utah Valley will host the three-day, 54-hole tournament, which begins Sunday morning and runs through Tuesday.
The 19-team field includes Big Sky foes Weber State, Idaho State, and Idaho, along with schools from the WAC, WCC, MWC, and Big West, among others.
"We're excited to get going and compete," head coach Brittany Basye said. "It's a good field so we need to have a good showing. The course looks open from what we've researched, and we have to watch for lots of bunkers. The only change in the lineup is taking Eva Heinz, the freshman, and the other four have the experience in collegiate events, playing in every event last year."
Scarlet Weidig, Lauren Greeny, Maddie Montoya, Jordan Briggs, and Eva Heinz represent the season-opening starting lineup for the Bobcats.
Each 18-hole round begins with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. M.T. Limited live scoring will be available on spikemark.com.
The course lists a yardage total of 6,143 yards and a par of 72.
"The big thing for all of us is learning the golf course since it will be our first time there, and course management," Basye said. "If our 'A' game is on, let's keep it on the whole time. It's go-time—they've been working hard and practicing hard. All five of them can hit the ball, so our strength is definitely our length. We've been focusing on our short game recently so hopefully it comes together."
Prior to the official start of the tournament on Sunday morning, teams will compete in a Par 3 Team Shootout competition on Saturday night, with shotgun starts at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. MT.
Live scoring for the Par 3 competition will be carried on the Golf Genius mobile app.
The Bobcats are coming off a memorable 2022-2023 season that saw them place second at the Big Sky Championships, their highest finish since they won the league in 1995.
Scarlet Weidig, Maddie Montoya, and Lauren Greeny headline a group of returners from a team that set school records in scoring average (302.5), low 18-hole round (286, -2), low 36-holes (576, E), and low 54-hole tournament (872, +8) last year.
Four of the team's top five finishers at the conference championship return to this year's squad, joined by freshmen Eva Heinz, Hannah Boraas, and Belle Brezovski.
Weidig broke program records for tournaments won (3) and scoring average (74.78) in her first season as a Bobcat, while tying the record for lowest 54-hole score (-8) and earning All-Big Sky Third Team honors.
Greeny tied the program record for low round (67) as a freshman last year, and tied for fourth at the Big Sky Championships, making it on the All-Tournament team, before wrapping up her summer by winning the Montana State Women's Amateur Golf Championship.
