Premier event of the fall calendar features all ten Big Sky programs in action at TalonsCove Golf Club starting Monday and continuing through Tuesday
BOZEMAN, Montana – The Montana State women's golf team returns to Utah this weekend for one of the premier events on their fall calendar, the 'Big Sky 54 for IX' tournament hosted by the Big Sky Conference.
The 54-hole stroke-play tournament begins with 36 holes on Monday and wraps up with a final 18-hole round on Tuesday, and will feature all ten Big Sky women's golf teams in action at TalonsCove Golf Club in Saratoga Springs.
Monday's first round will have a shotgun start beginning at 8:15 a.m. MT, with the second round getting underway with another shotgun start at 1:15 p.m. MT.
Tuesday's third and final round on the 6,350-yard, par-72 course begins at 8:15 a.m. MT.
Lauren Greeny, Eva Heinz, Scarlet Weidig, Jordan Briggs, and Maddie Montoya compose the Bobcats' starting lineup, while Hannah Boraas and Belle Brezovski will compete as individuals.
Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
"It's on a golf course that is similar to the one we played last week," head coach Brittany Basye said. "The biggest thing for us is consistency. Obviously, we had a great final round at Timpanogos, but we still finished 15th for the tournament, so my point to these girls is we need to have more consistent rounds. They might not have to be so low, but we need to have consistency."
The Bobcats kicked off their season at the Timpanogos Collegiate Classic two weeks ago in Provo, setting a program record for team low round by shooting a ten-under 278 on the third and final day of the tournament.
The eye-popping mark broke the previous school record of 286 by eight strokes, which was set last April at the Big Sky Championships.
Lauren Greeny, a sophomore from Pullman, Washington, matched her own school record for low individual round by shooting a five-under 67 with seven birdies.
Eva Heinz, a freshman from Goodyear, Arizona, shot a four-under 68 on the third day of the tournament, the fifth-lowest individual round in program history in only her first collegiate tournament.
"Short game is going to be our focus again," Basye said. "We had a lot of birdies last week—we can really birdie. We're putting well right now, which is good. This is the first tournament of three in a row so we've got to again stress the consistency, keep everybody healthy, and play one shot at a time, not hitting a bad shot and then following it up with another bad shot. We're going to have bad shots, but don't back them up back-to-back, let's try and recover."
In addition to featuring the only opportunity for all ten Big Sky teams to compete against each other before next spring's Big Sky Championships, the tournament will also be incorporating women's leaders from around the region to interact with the student-athletes and help provide a unique experience.
"Implementing new ideas and innovative events is something in which our conference office takes a lot of pride, and I'm very excited to see this celebration of Title IX come to fruition," Commissioner Tom Wistrcill said in June. "We are looking forward to having our entire league come together to celebrate something so vital to the NCAA landscape, and are excited to provide a special experience for the participating student-athletes alongside a competitive three rounds of golf."
Southern Utah, Utah Valley, Utah Tech, and Hartford will also field teams at the tournament.
