BOBCAT NOTES:
*Montana State's Duncan Hamilton ended last season as the national runner-up in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, claiming a silver medal while breaking a Big Sky record that has stood since 1984. Hamilton, a Bozeman native, crossed the line in 8:18.8, which not only was a league record, but was also the third fastest time ever by a collegian in the steeplechase and met the standard for the World Championships.
*One of many Bobcats to make the trip up South 11th Avenue from Bozeman High School, Lucy Corbett is a school-record high jump holder, both indoors and outdoors. One of the top high jumpers in Big Sky and Montana State history, the All-American performer has participated in four NCAA Championships and has won six Big Sky titles. This spring, she finished second (1.77m; 5-9.25) at the Big Sky championships, coming off an injury that sidelined her for most of the outdoor season. Last summer, she made her first appearance at the USA Track and Field Championships. Lucy posted a personal-best and Big Sky record 6-2.25 indoors to win the 2022 league title, and notched 6-1.50 outdoors, the second-best mark in Big Sky history. Lucy's highest NCAA finish came at the 2022 indoor championships as she finished 8th overall.
*Camila Noe recently captured the Big Sky outdoor title at 10,000-meters and finished second at 5,000-meters. She is a multiple time all-Big Sky performer who has left her name in the Bobcat record book. She currently ranks second in the Big Sky and second all-time at MSU in the 10,000-meters with a time of 33:00.41, set at this spring's Bryan Clay Invitational in Los Angeles (the time ranks 19th in the NCAA West). Noe ranks No. 1 at MSU at 5000-meters and is 10th all-time at 1500-meters.
*Kalispell product Ben Perrin is the only Bobcat athlete to compete in two races this weekend. He will run the 10,000-meters on Wednesday night and the 5,000-meters on Friday. Perrin captured the Big Sky 10,000-meter title two weeks ago in Greeley, Colo., clocking 29:46.51. He recorded a season-best 28:18.02 in the event at the Bryan Clay Invitational in mid-April. Perrin placed third at the Big Sky meet at 5,000-meters in a time of 14:12.63. His season-best mark (13:39.45) came at the Payton Jordan meet April 21 in Stanford, Calif.
*Laurel native Levi Taylor and Duncan Hamilton became just the second Bobcats in history to compete at the NCAA Championships in the same event, last spring. Taylor had a breakout sophomore year in steeplechase, earning the silver medal at the Big Sky Championships. He went on to finish fourth at the NCAA West Preliminaries with a time of 8:36.53. At the NCAA meet, Taylor garnered Second Team All-America honors placing ninth overall in 8:33.37. His 8:30.20 in the preliminary round at the NCAAs was a PR and is second all-time at MSU.
*Rob McManus will join Hamilton and Taylor in the steeplechase on Friday night. McManus, a sophomore from Cashmere, Wash., ranks 14th in the West heading into this weekend's competition with a PR of 8:42.93- set at the Eastern Kentucky Rick Erdmann Invitational in April.
*MSU javelin throwers Cooper Hoffman and Pat Vialva finished sixth and ninth, respectively at this season's Big Sky Championships in Greeley, Colo. Hoffman, a junior from Dillon, will be making his third appearance at the NCAA Prelims. Last spring, he placed 37th overall with a throw of 193-9. Hoffman's PR came at the 2022 Big Sky meet with a toss of 215-3. This spring, he posted a season-best mark of 206-6 at the Redlands Invitational. Vialva, a freshman from Portland, Ore., has a season-best mark of 206-4, set at the Bengal Invite on April 28.
*Owen Smith, a redshirt sophomore from Billings, competed in the 1500-meters on Wednesday night. The product of Billings Senior recorded a season-best 3:49.55 at the Tom Gage Classic in May, which altitude adjusted to 3:434.70- the 11th best mark in the Big Sky to date. At the Big Sky Championships two weeks ago, he finished sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase and was 11th at 5000-meters.
*Maisee Brown, another Billings Senior graduate on the Bobcat Track and Field team, competes in pole vault on Thursday night. Brown, who makes her first NCAA Prelims appearance this week, matched her PR of 13-2.5 to finish third at the Big Sky Championships, two weeks ago.
