MSU looks to finish season strong
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State reaches the pinnacle of its golf season next week when the Bobcats compete in the 2023 Big Sky Conference Golf Championships at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Before the intensity of championship competition arrives, though, Bobcat head coach Brittany Basye hopes to break things into component parts in a relaxed manner. "We'll be on the course Saturday and look to dial up our short game," she said. "We'll work on our accuracy 100 yards and in, and we have some time built in to do some things to relax our minds a little bit. And then starting Monday we have three days to lay it all on the line."
Basye leans on a familiar lineup next week. All-conference honorees Scarlet Velasquez Weidig and Kameryn Basye anchor a lineup that also features Lauren Greeny and Maddie Montoya. Those four have played in all eight tournaments during the 2022-23 season, while Jordan Briggs has played in seven of the eight. Those players possess the team's top scoring averages.
"Everyone in this lineup can play even-par golf," Basye said. "That means when we're playing at our best we're capable of playing below par golf. That gives us the chance to compete with every school in the league."
The Cats enter the championship event somewhat familiar with Talking Stick. "Kameryn and Jordan played it last year, and all five played up to 12 or 13 holes there this year, so there is some knowledge of the course. It's not super tight and the greens are big enough that you can hit it to spots rather than being (the size of) dimes."
Basye said her team's strengths can play well at Talking Stick. "We have some length so our plan is to take advantage of that and go after some birdies on the par fives."
Still, Basye indicated that the mental portion of the game plays larger than ever during a championship event. "This team is gritty, so I know they'll play with grit," she said. "We just need to stay positive and bring out the positive talk. There's nothing to lose, they just have to go out and play golf. We can't take big numbers, because you can't recover from the double- and triple-bogies. They're competitive enough, they just need to stay positive and go play. And I think they'll do that."
The Bobcats tee off beginning at 9:30 am MT Monday morning, with live results streamed at Golfstat.com.
