Cat/Griz Dual Awaits Bobcat Track and Field this Weekend
3/31/2023 1:08:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Montana State is aiming for its fifth-straight outright win over the Montana Grizzlies in the annual Cat/Griz Dual.
BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Montana State track and field team aims to continue its dominant streak in the annual Cat/Griz Dual meet at Dornblaser Field in Missoula this Saturday.
The women's hammer throw will lead off the field action at 10 a.m., then the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase will kick off the track action at 11:15. Attendance is free. A link to the final results and live results (if available) will be posted to the men's and women's track team's schedule pages on msubobcats.com.
Recently, the Cat/Griz dual has been a lopsided affair. MSU's men's team has won 10 of the last 11 Cat/Griz dual meets, while the women have won eight of the past 10 meets. Montana leads the all-time series 55-32 for the men, yet the Bobcat women have a 20-19 lead in the rivalry series.
This week was supposed to be the second-consecutive week competing in Missoula for the full MSU track and field team, however, unexpected snowfall prevented the majority of the team from making the drive westward last weekend for the Al Manuel Invitational. Instead, the MSU throwers that made the drive the day prior won four events, including Leah Klein winning the shot put and the hammer throw, Matt Furdyk placing first in the hammer throw and Carter Slade capping off the meet with a win in the shot put.
Following this week, the Bobcats will have one week off before traveling to sunny, Southern California for the Mt. SAC Relays, the Brian Clay Invitational and a pair of meets at Long Beach State. All schedule updates can be found on both the men's and women's track team's schedule pages at msubobcats.com.

FROM THE HEAT SHEET
- The Cat/Griz Dual marks the long-awaited debut of the Montana State distance team, most of whom haven't competed since the Big Sky Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Bobcats have the top seed times in every distance event from the 1,500 meters (Mya Dube and Chris Bianchini), up to the 5,000 meters (Camila Noe, Duncan Hamilton). This includes the 3,000-meter steeplechase, in which the men's team has the top four seed times, while the women's team has the top two seed times.
- Maisee Brown and Kyle Yonker look to continue their solid starts to the outdoor season, as both pole vaulters come into the meet as the athletes to beat. Brown, in particular, broke into the top-10 record books by clearing 12-9 at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet on March 18.
- Coming off throwing in Missoula last weekend, the Bobcat throwers are the favorites in the men's hammer, shot put and discus, plus the women's shot put and hammer throws. Klein is in good position to sweep the throws events, but this time she will be joined by fellow senior Jordan Fink.
- MSU will trot out an all-freshman team in the men's 4x100 meters of Sean Jackson, Stryder Todd-Fields, Noah Barbery and Xavier Simpson. There will be two women's 4x100-meter relay teams — most of whom are underclasswomen — and the women's 4x400-meter relay team will make its outdoor debut.
- Montana State will compete in a handful of events for the first time this outdoor season, including the men's 400-meter hurdles (Janis Pohl), women's 400-meter hurdles (Millie Hubbell, Anna Trudnowski) and the men's high jump (Dylan Lee, Ian Fosdick). Save for Hubbell, all will be making their season debuts.
