Freshmen Shine in Final Fall Tournament

“The standouts last weekend were all four freshmen,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. “Meg and Paula in singles and Hudson and Angel in doubles.”
Montana State freshmen Paula Dougherty and Meg McCarty paced Montana State in its final tournament of the fall season at the Gonzaga Invitational over the weekend in Spokane, Wash.
Dougherty, a product of Raleigh, N.C., won four singles matches en route to the Gold Draw consolation title, while McCarty, a Bozeman High grad, reached the finals of the Blue Draw behind three hard-fought victories.
MSU also received outstanding efforts from freshmen Hudson Hawkins and Angel Bean in doubles play.
"The standouts last weekend were all four freshmen," said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. "Meg and Paula in singles and Hudson and Angel in doubles."
McCarty reached the Blue Draw finals with wins over Elyse Tse, Washington State, 6-4, 6-4; Isabella Forshee, Eastern Washington, 6-0, 6-0; and Rose Hayes, Gonzaga, 6-0, 2-6, 12-10. McCarty dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Lunda Kumhom, Washington State, in the championship match.
"Meg beat three great players to get into the finals," Woodburn said. "She was down three match points in her semifinal match and came back and won. She was calm and collected on the big moments. Meg was playing her disruptive tennis and hurting her opponents."
Dougherty, who dropped her opening match in the Gold Draw, fought her way back through the consolation bracket. After suffering a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 setback to Gonzaga's Kiana Oda, Dougherty rattled off victories over Diana Khaydarshina, Idaho, 6-3, 6-4; Nika Beukers, Portland State, 6-4, 6-4; and Alaia Rubio-Perez, Portland, 6-4, 6-4 for the consolation title.
"Paula lost a tough three setter in the first round to a top Gonzaga player," Woodburn stated. "She then came back and won three hard battles to win the back draw.
"Paula played with heart, and it was fun to see the team cheer her on in the last match," Woodburn added.
Also winning singles matches for MSU were Marta Garcia-Reboredo, Jazmin Lerman, Felicia Jayasaputra, and Hawkins.
In doubles action, Garcia-Reboredo and McCarty combined to reach the Gold Draw consolation semifinals. The duo dropped its opening match to Portland State, before defeating a second PSU squad, receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, and eventually falling to Idaho, 6-4.
Hawkins and Bean paired for the Bobcats in the Blue Draw. The tandem dropped its opening match to Gonzaga 6-2, before recording back-to-back wins over Portland State and Idaho to reach the final match.
"In doubles we started slow, but responded very well," Woodburn said. "Hudson and Angel won the back draw by trusting their game and playing aggressive style doubles.
"Overall, I was very pleased with our last tournament of the year," she said.
