All six Bobcats shoot 75 or below as MSU ties third-best 18-hole mark in program history with a 2-under-par 286
HENDERSON, Nevada – The Montana State women's golf team wrapped up their fall slate of tournaments on Tuesday, finishing competition on a high note at The Clash at Boulder Creek in Henderson, Nevada.
Shooting 286 as a team over the final 18 holes, the Bobcats closed out the first half of their season with a mark that ties for the third-best round in program history, matching their then-record performance at the Big Sky Championship last spring.
Across 15 rounds this fall, the Bobcats have now met or broken what had been the school record for low 54-hole score coming into the season on three occasions.
For the tournament, Montana State finished in a tie for 13th with Weber State, shooting 880 (305-289-286) to keep pace in a talented field.
Every Bobcat turned in a scorecard that read 75 or below on Tuesday, with the balanced team effort showcasing the depth of a squad that has had five different golfers finish with a round in the 60s this fall.
"Very happy with the last two rounds," head coach Brittany Basye said. "Having a not-so-good first round really hurt our overall finish. A few positives included [Lauren] Greeny getting a top 20 in a tough field. We had under-par rounds from Greeny, Scarlet [Weidig], Maddie [Montoya], and Hannah [Boraas], and that is always key. This was our final tournament of the fall and I'm glad they all finished under 75. If we get a few more of those putts to fall that were definitely makeable, we are looking at another record. They didn't fall, but -2 as a final round score we will take."
Redshirt junior Scarlet Weidig put a bow on her stellar fall with a 3-under-par round of 69, leading MSU's charge on Tuesday. The 69 is the sixth time this season the native of Belen Heredia has gone under par.
Sophomore Lauren Greeny followed up Monday's round of 67 with another below-par round of 71, tying for 17th individually with a career-best 54-hole total of 213 (75-67-71).
Greeny recorded nine birdies to only three bogeys over the final 36 holes of the tournament, capping her fall season on a positive with her first top-20 finish of the year.
Sophomore Maddie Montoya continued her steady play with a final round score of 73, finishing in a tie for 48th with a 221 (77-71-73).
Freshman Eva Heinz finished tied for 72nd, Weidig tied for 78th, and redshirt junior Jordan Briggs placed 91st.
Competing individually, freshman Hannah Boraas tied for 69th with a tournament that included a 4-under-par round of 68 on Monday, tied for the sixth-lowest round in program history.
"These ladies can play some great golf," Basye said. "We need to review our stats for the fall and when spring season begins be ready to work hard with what we learned this fall and from our stats."
Long Beach State won the team title in the tournament hosted by Northern Arizona at Boulder Creek Golf Club, finishing 25-under-par with a final total of 839. San Francisco (-14) placed second, and Northern Arizona (-12) took third.
