Bobcats Serve Notice at ITA Mountain Regional

“Angel Bean had some great wins over the weekend and played smart tennis,” said MSU head coach Suzie Woodburn. “The final day we won four out of five matches which was a great way to end the tournament.”
Montana State brought one senior and three freshmen to the 2023 ITA Women's Di Mountain Region tournament hosted by the University of Utah in Salt Lake City over the weekend. The foursome combined for six singles victories and two doubles wins.
MSU's play was highlighted by freshman Angel Bean. The product of Montreal, Canada captured two wins on opening day in the B Draw, defeating Wyoming's Ante Jeselle 6-3, 6-1, and Northern Arizona's Dolavee Tumthong 6-0, 6-3. Bean was defeated by BYU's Madison Smith in the round of 16, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Also posting wins for the Bobcats were freshmen Paula Dougherty and Meg McCarty and senior Jazmin Lerman. Lerman, playing in her first ITA Mountain Regional, downed New Mexico's Marie Sodre 6-4, 6-4, while Dougherty dispatched Idaho State's Hana Cho 6-0, 6-3. McCarty finished her singles action with a 6-1, 6-3 win over NAU's Daryna Shoshyna
"The best part about regionals was that every match was competitive," Woodburn said. "We played some of the best in the region, and it only came down to a few points. I thought we had good energy all weekend and it was a great opportunity to see and compete at this level."
Lerman and McCarty combined in Main Draw doubles and defeated Montana's Olivia Oosterbaan and Maria Goheen 8-4. Dougherty and Bean posted a 7-5 victory over Idaho's Diana Khaydarshina and Rachelle Starreveld.
Montana State plays at the Gonzaga Invite Oct. 27-29 in Spokane, Wash.
