MSU Golf will close book on fall season with 54-hole tournament beginning Sunday outside Las Vegas
BOZEMAN, Montana – The Montana State women's golf team wraps up their fall slate of tournaments this weekend with a trip to the Silver State to compete in The Clash at Boulder Creek, hosted by Northern Arizona at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Henderson, Nevada.
The 54-hole tournament begins with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. PT on Sunday, continues with 18 more holes on Monday starting at 8 a.m. PT, and finishes with a final 18-hole round on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. PT.
Live scoring will be available on BirdieFire.
MSU will roll out a starting lineup of Scarlet Weidig, Maddie Montoya, Lauren Greeny, Eva Heinz, and Jordan Briggs, with Hannah Boraas competing individually.
This fall marks the third edition of The Clash at Boulder Creek—Montana State placed 15th last year with Nevada taking the team title at the par-72, 6,334-yard course outside Las Vegas.
The 20-team field this weekend features Boise State, Cal State Bakersfield, Fresno State, Idaho, Illinois State, Long Beach State, North Dakota, Northern Colorado, San Diego State, San Francisco, Seattle, Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UNLV, UTEP, UTRGV, Weber State, and host Northern Arizona.
"The field is a very good field," head coach Brittany Basye said. "Now that we've seen the golf course I think we can prep a little bit differently. I think we're in a better spot this year in terms of kids being on line and hitting targets. This golf course is one where there are some goal holes--green-light, go get them, birdie holes."
The tournament will be the fourth on the road in five weeks for the Bobcats, who are coming off a difficult outing in Spokane two weekends ago at the Eagle Invitational.
"I think the key in Henderson is we still have to have our short games," Basye said. "We've been talking about short games since day one. When we play really well, our short game is working, and last week I feel like we had trouble putting."
Scarlet Weidig (Belen Heredia, Costa Rica) leads MSU with a 73.83 stroke average, sitting 25-over-par through 12 rounds on the season.
Sophomore Maddie Montoya (Boise, Idaho) ranks second on the team in stroke average at 74.63, while freshman Eva Heinz (Goodyear, Ariz.) is third with an average of 74.75 and sophomore Lauren Greeny (Pullman, Wash.) close behind at 75.00.
The Clash at Boulder Creek will mark the fifth and final competition of the fall for the Bobcats before they pick back up with their spring schedule in February.
"The highlight is to finish on a good note for the fall season for us," Basye said. "I think the biggest thing for me is handling that pressure if we can get in those situations--even if we're trying to fight for fifth--can we fight and finish on a high note. That will be a big thing for us to focus on."
